the first time i started my band, i was 20 and called my friend (who now lives in texas) saying what i wanted to do, etc., so we go over to my other friend-who's-having-a-party-that-night's house and gather the other member's there, while i get the drummer involved by a message. it was simple as that, a few days from then we were practing and it was rough but showed potential. a few more practices & it basically narrowed into a trio, which we recorded & released an ep with by the next year. not many shows, but at least a couple involving some variation of those guys

2013, my friend had moved to texas & the drummer we used to play with was too busy with other stuff. i put up an ad and basically reassemble the band (who ended up having plenty of mutual friends with me anyway) using our older recordings as something of a showcase. we practice for months, get some kind of set together & are playing live by the end of the year. the next year sees all kinds of performances, though since it was more or less my first time dealing with booking & really being an actively "gigging band" there were plenty of lame and/or unattended ones which ultimately led to that drummer getting aggravated and leaving.

shortly after this, one of the dudes who'd seen us play on mardi gras or something contacts me and offers to play drums immediately. he is amazing, and learns practically everything in a day. we have a show the next night. play more, record another set of songs for an ep (which in itself is a debacle which is way more convoluted & takes way longer than it should have more or less because we got an outside engineer to handle the recording & whatnot) - this, along with a couple of personal problems & regrets/remorses of my own which apparently invaded the "aura" of the drummer (who was over-the-top spiritual & into zen/rocks/whatever) who basically went off into his own world and opted to start feeling sorry for himself instead.

in the end, ep came out, we played a few shows, but everything just feels broken by this point and the bassist had some sort of nervous breakdown or something where he just had to quit basically everything he could, band included. it's been incredibly depressing, dare i say devastating! and frankly, moral of the story is: if you're going to start a band in this day and age, you better have your shit really together & be ready to tell people what is what if you're the one in charge. because in the end, people are not unconditionally dedicated, even if they're vastly interested in what you're doing at first, if it's not a simple & quick point a to point b thing in terms of the actual band, people are going to fall out & prove to not be quite as dedicated or driven as they appeared to be at first. that's all i got for now!
That really sucks man, it mirrors like my last 3 bands where basically I was the only one pushing and striving and everyone else was just trying to sleep with each other (or with me), doing drugs, or refusing to learn their instruments.

But then sometimes it all came together and we'd have so much fun that I still think it was all worth it for each band.

My feeling now is if you're going to push bands and do music you need to be willing to have your heart broken over and over and over and over

btw I really liked "the argument." Drums were wild man. Kinda funky, which you don't hear a lot in rock these days. I wanted to hear more of that guitar solo.

Mals, really enjoyed your EP. Has a loose and fun feel to it. Kind of reminds me of The Sea and Cake with a more rock feel.

How did you work up those electronic parts?

thanks!

that ep was nice 'cos the last thing we did was so tightly recorded & performed and all that that i needed to do something more loose & spontaneous or i was gonna go nuts

the electronic parts were just kind of experimental production things i opted to put in as "bonus sections" of the songs rather than turn 'em into full track themselves - i like to program or record that kind of stuff & manipulate it enough to where it's not easily reproducable or recognizable what the source might have been, mostly cos i normally hate "stock synth" kind of sounds

I enjoyed this song a lot. I'm guessing that's not a real Mellotron playing the string samples but it is immediately reminiscent of the MCIS era songs that use it. The song really comes alive in the second half.

i can appreciate that superficially, it seems rather inert. though my own enjoyment comes from listening to how it does evolve and shift constantly throughout, albeit not in any drastic way. of course i'm giving it a concentrated listen on headphones... and after all, it's a texture, not a "song." wouldn't exactly crank it in my 'vette, you know?
