Even from the Big Two, there's still some fine stuff. DC kind of dulled my interest in a lot of their characters with the reboot, but as of this month, they are kind of trying to be less homogenous and are trying to directions and genres. Like, the update of Prez had a great first issue, sort of this absurd political satire in the vein of Chaykin's American Flagg. They are trying their hand at comedy with Bizarro, Bat-Mite, and Harley Quinn (although everything about post-reboot Harley Quinn pisses me off because they tried to make her "edgy" and bring her in line with the Arkham game designs). And they are giving more obscure characters some titles instead of everything just being Batman and Green Lantern (though GL is no longer the tentpole franchise it once was since Johns and Tomasi/Gleason left).
At Marvel, Waid and Samnee's Daredevil is killing it, and I'm hearing great things about Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel.

Actually I forgot another important thing

Because '90s wisdom says that no superhero costume can't be made better with more stabby parts on it. I'm surprised he left out the pouches and bandolier.

did i mention an ex of mine appears as herself in a cameo in a WW issue? well she does. or is supposed to. it may not be out yet. Though that was many months ago so i'd think its out by now.

its just weird to me.

actually i think it's a proper like graphic novel, not an issue of whatever ongoign series.

The second image isn't too bad, art-wise. It's just a shitty design.

The first image, though, is awful. Wonder Woman's weird cub-nose face (which is the same face every Finch woman has), the inability of facial expressions to convey the mood of the scene (because he always focuses on dolling up his women and making them look fair and delicate, regardless of context), the shitty pose. What I was particularly drawing attention to, though, was the dialogue. "Vegetative injustice." Because, you know, Swamp Thing is a plant guy.

Some more Finch gems, though:
(SPINE? WHAT SPINE? WHAT NEED DOES ONE HAVE FOR A SPINE WHEN ONE IS A GOD?!)

These ones don't even get image tags:

Hmm. I know Grant Morrison has a Wonder Woman graphic novel coming out soon, which I'm excited for. So does Jill Thompson, though hers is more of a storybook for children.

That would be the most appropriate thing.

On the bright side, if we ever get to terraforming other planets, we would surely have already done something about climate change on our own by then, using the same or similar technology.

Well, I mean, like, Wonder Woman's anatomy is totally fucked in that second picture. Something odd is going on with her neck, sternum, and spine. Tell me where Batman's center of gravity is in that Forever Evil cover. And what the hell he and Luthor are doing with their legs. And Batman's jaw. The first Justice League image is anatomically okay (aside from the nonsensical perspective on Superman and The Flash's alien head), but c'mon, how come the dudes look all angry and stern and actiony and Wonder Woman is, like, posing for a Maxim pinup? I assure you that the White Rabbit character made no more sense in context. Also, if "vegetative injustice" doesn't do it for you, how about "Call Me ONE-FACE now!"? (Again, this made no more sense in context. He's literally saying to call him One-Face because he has muscles now.)

I wouldn't say Finch is the current whipping boy. That honour goes to Land, the only worthy successor to Liefeld.

He's got an entire blog devoted to him:

Yeah, definitely better than Liefeld, but that's faint praise.

I don't know much about Mad, but I think he did a recent Inhumans series or something. Not that I know anything about Inhumans. Aren't they just X-Men who aren't The X-Men?

That's the one. earth one. It's drawn by Yannick Paquette who is a montrealer and she knows him (she's a graphic designer) and he put her likeness for some throwaway character who has a few lines. She even gets a nametag with her name on it cause its at an hospital, she's a nurse in the story i think.

hey disco stu, you seem knowledgeable on the mechanics behind comic books

i've always found the consistency of comic books a bit jarring. it's interesting, i mean
it's like with disney films, that manage to sort of look the same (at least up until the late 90s) for decades even though the animators\artists are everchanging. same with comic books.
how do they do that? is there a system to it?

Things like marvel and Disney have style sheets they adhere to.

the most hospitable place in the solar system that's not earth is the upper atmosphere of Venus. Gravity is similar to earth, and atmospheric pressure is similar. It's also much closer to earth. only a couple of months if timed properly. plus it's closer to the sun so using solar power is much easier than on mars. The gravity issue will become a major problem sending people to mars. They'll be in zero or low gravity for years before coming back to earth. that alone could kill them

Thanks, but I wouldn't say I'm super-knowledgeable. I used to draw and want to be a comic-book artist, so I guess I've read a little bit about it, but even then, I only ever practiced drawing figures, and never tried any paneling or actual storytelling. Even trying a single page seems way too daunting to me.

Animation typically uses very rigid style sheets and characters built from simple shapes in order to get everyone to draw a character on model. It would be really distracting is a character changed from frame-to-frame. A lot of animation is copying an image exactly, but changing one part, like the arm or something, so that it moves in animation.

I wouldn't really say it's the same for comic books. I mean, everybody draws Superman in a blue costume with a red cape and an S crest on his chest, but Gary Frank's Superman looks different from Frank Quitely's Superman. There are definitely artists within similar camps of style, like the aforementioned manga-influenced "90's Image" style, which has guys like Jim Lee and Jason Fabok (two of them who can actually into anatomy). They don't really share a "model."

There have been times when companies did have "house styles," though. For example, during the '60s and '70s, Superman was "supposed" to look like how Curt Swan drew him. When Jack Kirby left Marvel for DC and started writing/drawing Jimmy Olsen, editors didn't like the way he drew Superman, so they actually hired somebody to erase all of his Superman heads and replace them with Curt Swan-ish Superman heads. I've also noticed that DC seems to have made their style more rigid again in recent years. Before the 2011 reboot, you could kind of see how different artists would render the same costume differently, for example. The textures Lee Bermejo would give it would give it a different sense of materials than the textures Alex Ross would. Now, it seems like everything down to the pattern of seam lines is in some style guide somewhere. It also looks like artists have probably been instructed to draw Superman without his spit curl and give him a more tossed hairstyle. You can see the difference between how Gary Frank drew Superman before the reboot, and how he draws him now.

Marvel seems to be a lot less strict than DC is these days. Their output seems to have some more diverse artists and styles, like the recent Squirrel Girl or She-Hulk series. Though it looks like DC is trying to catch up a bit, as they just released a slew of new titles that are a bit more visually distinct, and sort of refreshed older titles, as well. Like the new Batgirl.

what strikes me about comic book consistency is how nearly every comic book has a very particular inking and shading style, both in sketching and colouring

not sure how it wounds up so similar, employing probably dozens (if not hundreds) of artists. i'd think in the end you can't really get rid of personal touch, but apparently it's not impossible

yeah i remember the kirby face erase as an entry in the comic book legends column.

to be fair, kirby's faces look like apes. That's right, I just shat on Kirby. Whatcha gonna do about it. Let's just say his style was out of touch by the 70's, I feel.
