Default General gardening thread

I figured it was high time to make this thread. Anyone that has anything to discuss about gardening or even just their enjoyment of nature and plant life can speak freely in here. Pictures are very welcome. I will also be giving advice if asked.

So I decided to grow sweetpeas this year. I used Johnny's Seeds "Elegance Pink Diana" and "Elegance Salmon Rose". I think next year I will plant even more in even more places (this is in full, southern exposure sun in moderately good soil- well-draining silt with mulch. Could have more organic matter!) and a mix instead of two varieties. This was my test run. I didn't think they would get to the point of blooming because I planted them late and NJ has some hot summers but they made it and I'm in love.

nothing i want to grow, grows in this stupid country, without constant help. and the birds are all too devious and lacking in moral fibre so anything i do grow just gets stolen.

Which salad leaves and herbs can I grow here without too much effort, and how can I improve the soil enough to grow them?

What's the soil like where you are? I experienced sandy, lean, but typically nutritionally fine soil where I was.

The answer is usually compost. Organic matter works magic.

Winter: lettuce. Lettuce is very easy to grow. Mâche is easy too. Pea shoots. Violets. Hold on, I gotta wake up.

Grew a ton of stuff that is starting to yield some veggies!! Got tomatoes, corn, squash, jalapenos, habaneros, green beans, cilantro, cucumbers, and watermelon. I don't have a camera phone though. But seriously so many tomatoes. They're all delicious so far, I haven't tried the squash or cucumbers yet. The main problem is keeping the dogs and bunnies away :| 'Bama is great for growing produce, I haven't had to do anything special besides plant the seeds and water.

We also have a ton of flowers in the front yard. There's lilies, azaleas, gardenias, and of course morning glories. The tulips have died already.

If someone tells me how to resize photos I will. I wasn't posting them large to be a jerk.

I planted tomatoes and an assortment of peppers in my grandfathers garden this year and my dad is tending to them

Did some community gardening as well, which is a real joy. Love to do manual labor like that

No, I had never even heard of it. It's not bad... I tried a photo of Asclepias tuberosa and Oenothera speciosa and it got both. I knew I would trick it with this Calycanthus flower.

Which is a common garden plant but not as common as the other two. I suspect it recognizes color and this doesn't have a unique enough color to matter. I'm going to play around with it some more with some plants not found in cultivation.

So basically what I'm trying to say it is that it's cool, but I don't have much use for it because at the risk of sounding like a jerk, I know pretty much all the ornamental plants out there and if I don't know it I can key it out with my knowledge of taxonomy and morphology and all that stuff.

It identified a showy orchid as correct. I'm impressed. It got an Agalinus wrong but I got a kick out of how the other photos were plants being held, just as it was in my photo
