Do you learn about it in school, about the two waters meeting and stuff like that? It just seems like such a fascinating place.
My friend's husband is from Sao Paolo and she said when they visit it's scary and they never leave the house they just stay there behind the big gates and fence, and swim in the pool or sit inside in the air conditioning, because it's too dangerous to go out much, on the streets. Her husband is so lovely - but he yells if my friend leaves any doors unlocked when she leaves the house. I leave our front door unlocked every day, and leave our bikes out in the carport in full view of the street...it's a safe area with not many break ins or anything, but he can't get it out of his system, the paranoia I mean. Brazil seems like a fascinating place in that regard, some places are so wild and carefree, and others are so urban and dangerous. |

No, in school all our studies about brazil are focused on politics, the military coup, all the failed economic plans. We don't get to learn much about the cool places here.
But I do know some things about Manaus by talking to people who went there and it's a city with awesome historical buildings and museums. I definitely want to go there someday. My city Porto Alegre is not nearly as bad as São Paulo is, I walk everywhere and was never robbed (I'm kinda lucky though, most people have been robbed on the streets). But yeah, you can't leave open doors, windows anything. Specially if you live in a house. Kinda the reason why I always preferred apartments because I don't have to worry as much. |

You know what brazilian food I love? That wheat stuff...it's a bit like couscous.
And also those sweet peanut treats that come in plastic tubs. I could eat 100 of those ![]() |

i dont think i will do it. after 5 years though i would have thought you'd retain some stuff. we have only done present and preterite tenses really, but we just started imperfect which is the easiest tense by far. i feel like if future is the same way it may not be too bad. but somehow i doubt it. |

Well it's not like it's her actual last name so she totally picked that knowing what it meant. her mom is french for one.

She could have chosen Mignonne at least. Which is cute.
but it means more like cute cute than pretty cute. And cute is something she never was. |

erica, as far as retention goes i'm sure i would be able to relearn it extremely quickly. i can still read most spanish, but speaking on the fly is another matter entirely. i translate in my head, which you're not really supposed to do, and i am too slow at that to have a normal conversation. the shit you learn in school is extremely limited and too proper anyway

i can mostly get along ok at work now, as long as i understand whichever verb they are using. i can read it and also write pretty well considering my limited vocab knowledge. i prob write at the level of an 8 or 10 year old or something. you know, once in a while get a conjugation wrong or use mi instead of mis, etc. i have to be creative since i only know prob like 100 verbs but usually i can find a way

same word yeah. but Mignon, the masculine version of the word, isn't pronounced like Mignonne. The way english people say filet mignon, they pronounce it like the feminine, mignonne. I would write how you're supposed to say it but i'm no good with phonetics.
And yes, what you're saying is in fact cute filet. Or dainty rather i believe. |
