I was browsing this thread at work earlier and idk if anyone brought it up yet but the american education system is set up to socialize children, not educate them.

and yea when children are under-socialized they often have grandiose ideas about things because they don't have the rest of the world beating them down for it. Not trying to say which is worse.

jury's still out on what's worse - low self of steam/humility vs way too much self esteem/no worries. i mean isn't that the type of moxy that built hollywood? the joe that won't take no for an answer? the dame that's out there every day - selling herself regardless of what people say? looking to hit it big?

if you want to sell yourself as a product you have to learn not to take no for an answer.

That's exactly what it's for. It's to make you a "normal" person so that you'll fit in with society and get hired.

On one hand it's limiting creativity, on the other it's producing people who won't be completely fucked once they realize that no one cares about their ideas.

School produces obedience and the ability to force yourself to do things you don't want to do.

You gotta define success

If success is happiness and having good relationships with other humans, then the most successful people are those that have learned to consider the needs and desires of people other than themselves.

If success is getting to have hot sex with a lot of different partners then the most successful people are those that have no interest in sustaining relationships with other humans.

If success is accumulating a lot of material wealth then the most successful people are those that can adequately compartmentalise their lives, so that their values (which for most people ******* caring for others) don't conflict with their hoarding of resources (which, in a finite and closed system like Earth, means that others will probably miss out).

It's all about how you define your terms.

How happy you are depends on your personal values and how much you do to honour them and meet the needs that they create within you - for companionship, education, respect, etc.

If you aren't going to college then nothing other than basic social skills, work ethic and being able to count are going to be useful.

You're never going to need to know the capital of Wisconsin or how to do calculus or which book Steinbeck wrote
