they all had to write down a cool name on a piece of paper. they then placed the pieces of paper in a hat and drew them out. logan wrote down "jean grey" because he secretly longed to be a woman. unfortunately, he's not that intelligent, and didn't realize that the name he wrote down on the paper would not become his throughout eternity.

Actually, "Jean Grey" is pronounced exactly like the Inuit word for "yellow blizzard which blows in from the north and smells suspiciously like bodily excretion." So, her name is perhaps the most fear-inspiring of all.
