Have you thought any further on the idea of a mega save-the-apartment party? I've seen this work dozens of times it never fails. Or if it does you've made some great friends along the way. Who knows maybe you'll fall in love again. It's perfect.

but there's no "dump" part in austin texas, the rent just keeps rising because people are willing to pay for it because they want to be "close to downtown" so they can "explore austin"

We did some apartment hunting and found a low income apartment complex just down the street, so our daily routine won't be too disturbed. The unit we're look to get is 1100 ft² and 3(!) bedrooms. Only 150 more than our current place. Credit not an issue. They're fine with the pets given a small deposit. So it's essentially double the square footage of our current place and we can turn the extra two rooms into offices, something we've been dying to have for a while.
