it's hard for me to imagine a scenario where i wouldn't tip at all. if their service was so bad that i wouldn't tip, i'd be driven to tell the manager about it.

i make a point of tipping the greater of 5 bucks or 20% every time. sometimes i will push the number up to 8 depending on the kind of place.

I do 15-20 but round it even because I have a thing about making totals even or palindromes. So if my food bill is like $15.72 I'm prob gonna tip either 3.28 or 4.28 to get an even 19 or 20.

Gas has to be an even say $45 or if I miss that and my tank is full, top it to 45.45 or even 45.54

there is a minimum i will go even for shit service. but i tip a whole lot more when it's enjoyable. i have found that when i am out with girl friends, girl servers will ignore us for a table of guys. it makes us tip less which just confirms their assumptions.

my friend melissa, though, will tell girls. 'hey, just because we're girls doesn't mean we're not gonna tip.' we're pretty loquacious when we're together so we always end up making friends with our server. we got one to sit down with us and take a shot. we hung out with another when she got out. one time we bought 6 calendars and 4 desserts from a girl at hooters because those who sold the most calendars and desserts got new years eve off.

Americans still go, but I advise americans to not go unless you have a EU or Canadian passport and bring EU or Can dollars. The casa I stayed in had some americans. They were so stupid to go to cuba. They had to pay a fine to get in and pay extra to have their money changed. And then the dummies ran out of money partying with who they thought was fidel's nephew and they were too dumb to realize that most places in cuba don't take credit cards. I don't know what happened to them but the last I saw of them they were meeting some domincan guy that was going to help them out to get money. So they are probably dead.

Also, they will curse you in the streets if they think you are american.

Hey yanks:

If you need to pay 20% on top of the cost of your meal so your wait staff can pay their rent, your minimum wage is too low. Sort that shit out. It is not cool.

if you don't leave a tip, how will the server know you aren't just ignorant of the expectation to tip? maybe you forgot. you end up looking bad either way.

The tipped minimum wage is much much much lower than the uhhh not tipped minimum wage. As has been discussed.

I think I argued with people on here about tipping for about 40 pages in 2002.

Germany has no minimum wage, low (sometimes no) tips are acceptable and server wages are perfectly livable.

A quick google search reveals that germany recently implemented a minimum wage this year. I wonder why they would pass such a law if wages were until now "perfectly livable".

A quick google search reveals that waiters made more than the brand new minimum wage (admittedly, I do not read Der Spiegel every day or follow the minutiae of German labour law). Moreover, a quick google search reveals that waiters weren't dying in the streets prior to .. oh wait, a quick google search reveals that it hasn't been implemented yet. I hope they can survive on the breadcrumbs they are making until 2015.

You do have a point. Wage disparity doesn't start to become a real concern until people starve to death. Until a society reaches that point, the social effects of low wages are negligible, at best.
