I'm heading over there in October for two weeks. It'll probably be too early for any obvious fallout should they approve the referendum.

There are small countries going it alone that do just fine. Like Iceland, which manages just fine on its own. But Iceland is also not economically and financially integrated with another large economy.

the currency issue alone is a big enough risk to vote no. If they stay on British Sterling they'll have no control over their currency, since it would still be managed by London.

Politically it will hand the British parliament to the Tories for the foreseeable future, since Scottish MPs tend to be much more liberal.

Scotland won't be able to afford their pension or healthcare systems, since it's heavily funded by revenue from the South.

Yes - I'm Scottish, and will be voting next week. I will be voting YES, I think. I have been undecided for most of the campaign but I am swaying towards a YES vote. It seems to be a pretty close race, at least as far as the polls are concerned, but it wasn't always that way. The NO (Better Together) campaign have been way ahead until the last few weeks. I can't help thinking the media have made up the recent polls to create a story

I must disagree with the comment above re Pensions, Healthcare and Scotland being heavily funded "from the south". It is well accepted on both sides that Scotland is a net contributor to the UK Exchequer. Pensions and the NHS are safe, indeed they are a cornerstone of the YES campaign.

I'm fairly sure the NOs will win come polling day. I think a lot of people will get cold feet and vote to preserve the Union. I wouldn't be too despondent in all honesty. 'Devo-max' has been assured in the event of a NO vote.

i think it's exciting and would vote yes if i were a citizen. who in their right mind would want to vote no and have to live with that the rest of their lives. even if it doesn't go through it's a pretty big step that it got as far as it did. the earth needs more re-arranging and less hands in less back pockets. scotland can make it on it's own.

Personally, I'd vote NO, because I want the end to nation states and to have a global community; so breaking away sort of acts against that to a degree.

endorsements by "sirs" carry weight to people old and needing of some cornerstone of whatever to validate their decision. the majority of people 60 and younger are resoundingly yes but the no campaign really carries its weight in numbers of old, scared, ill-informed potatos who are buying into this better together campaign. the real threat to the UK is that losing Scotland would mean them losing a country that carries a lot of weight in balancing the other side of the economy.

I really wonder about people like Sir Alex Ferguson and their Better Together stance. I mean he has lived in England for 30 years, maybe it's as simple as that - split loyalties?

He is a staunch Labour voter/supporter. The Labour Party are pro-Union, maybe that is his motivation??

Very broadly, you find that the wealthiest people are pro-Union and that your everyday working-class voters are more inclined to vote Yes.

As mentioned above, older voters (60+) are definitely No inclined. The older we get the more we resist change?

I definitely worry that it might not work and we'll all be worse off

Iceland got hit hard in 2008 when the EU markets crashed. It was less the fault of Iceland as it was of the EU banks. They defaulted on their debt and since then they've been in much better shape economically than EU states like Greece.

i agree. any perceived disadvantages seem like inertia and short term convenience. i wonder how the initiative for this vote started because most of the world should be working on them. generally speaking more nations, states, provinces, borders and municipalities means more representation and citizen power, which is only a disadvantage if you're lazy or uninformed

It's not heavily funded from the South as Scotland generates a shade under 10% in tax revenue but only gets 9.3% back in spending. Most of the spending is in the south near London and the debt created there gets spread around the entire U.K. Hence, why they want out.

This is part of that same momentum that has the BRICS growing in influence at this time.

The world is onto the US/UK/Isreali shell game with the Fiat being pumped by a Federal Reserve which, in essence, doesn't do much but export debt and war, in no particular order.

I'll be honestly sad if Yes doesn't win. I think all peoples should have a right to self-determination, but that probably isn't why I feel emotionally invested in the outcome. As someone who is not Scottish and does not live in Scotland (I'm an immigrant living in England), I'd love to know a place like independent Scotland could exist in this island.
