well, to start with, here's a list of martyr's for the civil rights cause, it includes journalists, clergy, citizens, etc.

As far as uniformed police administering violence, all you have to do is look up any one of many marches in the south during the 60s. Most victims were local black folks, but there were also people from the North and outsiders who were targeted because of they supported civil rights.

There were similar struggles in the latino rights movement in the 60s and 70s, which included the death of Ruben Salazar, a journalist who was killed by cops during a protest in LA.
