Default Go Canada! 2010 Biatches!

Yea, congratulations or some shit. Let's hope the games don't suck like normal.

Vancouver wins bid by three votes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Vancouver was awarded the 2010 Winter Olympics on Wednesday, taking the games back to Canada for the first time since 1988.

The International Olympic Committee selected the British Columbia city in a surprisingly tight contest with Pyeongchang, South Korea, which came within three votes of winning in the first round in what would have been a stunning upset.

The third bid city, Salzburg, Austria, was eliminated in the first round of the secret ballot.

With a simple majority needed for victory, Pyeongchang won the first round with 51 votes, but fell short of the 54 votes necessary to win the bid in that round. Vancouver followed with 40 votes and Salzburg received 16. Salzburg was eliminated, setting up a vote between Vancouver and Pyeongchang.

Vancouver then defeated Pyeongchang 56-53 in the final round.

The words that Canada had waited to hear came from IOC president Jacques Rogge, who opened a white envelope and declared: "The International Olympic Committee has the honor of announcing that the 21st Olympic Winter Games are awarded to the city of Vancouver."

In Vancouver, wild cheering and flag-waving erupted among those who gathered to watch the announcement at a downtown arena and about 90 miles away at a Whistler ski resort.

"Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. We did it!" screamed Jennifer Goepel, 28, on the floor of the General Motors Place where the city's main celebration occurred. Her face was painted red and white with the Canadian maple leaf.

Vancouver, the scenic Pacific coastal city whose bid is paired with the ski resort of Whistler, had been considered the front-runner for most of the campaign.

Canada hasn't had the Olympics since Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Games. Austria's last Olympics was the 1976 Innsbruck Games. South Korea staged the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, but no winter games have ever been held in an Asian country other than Japan.

The 2010 result could have major implications in the race for a bigger prize -- the 2012 Summer Olympics. A marquee field featuring New York, Paris, London, Madrid and Moscow, among others, is already in the race for 2012.

Awarding the 2010 games to North America leaves Europe in a strong position for 2012 -- at the expense of New York.

"We were completely agnostic about the outcome of this," said Dan Doctoroff, the leader of New York's 2012 bid who was in Prague as an observer. "From our particular perspective we really didn't feel like we had a stake in the outcome here...The reality is the winter and summer games are (on) a different track."

The biggest surprise was the showing by Pyeongchang, the least known of the candidates. Pyeongchang fell just short of winning in the first round in what would have been a stunning upset. But Vancouver picked up Salzburg's votes in the second round to prevail.

Cho Myung-soo, vice governor of Gangwon province, said he was disappointed but hopeful for the future. "We will try again in 2014," he said.

The Koreans scored points with a strong presentation stressing how the games could promote winter sports in Asia and bring peace and reconciliation on the divided Korean peninsula.

Salzburg, which prided itself on its winter sports tradition and world-class venues, sustained a bitter defeat.

Geography was a key factor in Vancouver's favor. The games of 2004 (Athens, summer) and 2006 (Turin, Italy, winter) are being held in Europe and 2008 (Beijing, summer) in Asia, leaving North America in line for 2010.

The games will come back to the continent eight years after the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.

Vancouver also was considered a top flight bid on technical merits alone. A recent IOC report gave Vancouver the best overall review, with high marks for its plans for sports venues, accommodations and financing.

Canada's understated campaign focused on the technical strengths of its "Sea to Sky Games" proposal, with most indoor venues in Vancouver and ski and sliding events at Whistler.

The three delegations had been allotted 60 minutes each for formal presentations to the IOC assembly.

Vancouver brought out Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and NHL great Wayne Gretzky, while Salzburg presented downhill ski star Hermann Maier and opera diva Grace Bumbry -- who sang "Climb Every Mountain" from "The Sound of Music."

The multimedia presentations are considered especially important in selection of winter games hosts.

Many of the 100-plus members come from countries with little or no interest or experience in winter sports. And, with visits to bid cities banned since the Salt Lake City scandal, the video presentations were as close as some delegates got to the ice rinks and ski slopes.

Vancouver led off the presentations with a look at its ``Sea to Sky Games'' concept linking the scenic Pacific coastal city with the ski resort of Whistler.

To the tune of a song by Vancouver rock star Bryan Adams, the Canadian video featured images of a bustling Vancouver along with scenes of skiing and other winter sports in Whistler.

"My commitment has never been stronger," Chretien told the delegates. "The games will be fully funded and guaranteed by the Canadian government. The games will be secure ... Everybody will have a great time and a lot of fun."

Gretzky, who was the general manager of the gold-medal winning team in Salt Lake City, said: "Trust us with your games and we will make you proud."

The Vancouver delegates also announced that the hockey final could be played at BC Place, a 50,000-capacity arena which is also projected to stage the opening and closing ceremonies indoor.

Salzburg's presentation had focused on two elements -- Maier and music, playing off its heritage as the birthplace of Mozart and setting of the 1956 classic film "The Sound of Music."

In a clear reference to suggestions that Vancouver had the advantage for geographical reasons, Maier said, "Sports should be the only reason for your votes."

Pyeongchang made the final presentation, which *******d a promise of government support from Prime Minister Goh Kun. Pyeongchang is in Gangwon province, which shares a border with North Korea.

"Selection of Pyeongchang will greatly help peace on the Korean peninsula -- it is what the IOC and Olympic ideals support," senior South Korean IOC member Kim Un-yong said.

Bid chairman Gong Ro-myung pleaded, "Please try something different and find hidden treasure this time."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

probably the vast majority.

I'm happy. I don't know where I'll be in 7 years, but I'd like to be out west seeing as I love vancouver, and I'd love to live in a city hosting the olympics.

new york is possibly the worst location for holding the games, plus you american fuckers should be banned from holding them for about 20 more years. You have had your fun.

maybe your dad can get a fucking job

The games are expected to:
Generate up to $10 billion in direct economic activity.
Create about 228,000 direct and indirect jobs throughout the province.
Result in up to $2.5 billion in incremental tax revenues.

An estimated $620 million Cdn of capital construction will occur from 2004 to 2010, including renovations to existing facilities and venues, new facilities and operating endowments for post-Games use.

Revenue estimates are $1.2 billion to $1.3 billion Cdn from broadcast rights, sponsorships, merchandise sales and ticket sales, which will offset the $1.3 billion cost of staging the Games.

If I remember correctly, only the St. Lake City Olympic games of 2002 and the Los Angeles Games of 1984 are the only ones in history to ever break even.

I thought the vast majority make some money. some lose big (ie montreal in 76) but I was under the impression that most places make money off them, or the benefits pay off in the long run.

Anyway, i'm willing to give the organizing commitee (ie, NOT the government) the benefit of the doubt. Some thigns you've just gotta try for. you can't say no to an event like the olympics just cause you're scared you'll lose money. They bring so much more than just money to the city.
