Exclamation Hide your mp3s, ladies and gents! The RIAA is at it again!

So the RIAA says, starting in August, that it's going to crack down on individual users of file-sharing programs...

I laugh at the music industries' idle threats to crack down on large individual users of file-sharing programs. All they have going on individual users are IP addresses, and the music industry's threats are just going to make programmers develop more sophisticated ways of masking trackable data.

I respect people who don't believe in file-sharing (though I disagree with them), but I doubt that, at this point, there is a way that it can be effectively stopped. There's ALWAYS gonna be some crazy hacker out there developing rip programs to get through CD copy protection and mask IP addresses, and he'll more than happily supply the rest of us geeks with the same programs (for a price, perhaps), and then the cycle starts all over again.

In short, this is a battle the RIAA can't win.

My friend David is actually gonna stop using Kazaa after July.

Eh, I don't give a fuck. I'm going to continue using file sharing programs because I'm not doing anything illegal. The RIAA is just pathetic, the record industry even moreso. Fuck Metallica. Music artists, just like sports atheletes and other entertainers shouldn't be making the money they are anyway. Most of the mp3s I have on my hard drive are of CDs I own anyway, and I will share them. It's just like lending a CD to a friend.

What you said is basically how I feel, too. Wasn't the RIAA saying the same thing when audio cassettes were originally released?

Then again, if they offer bountys on the information leading to the arrest/destruction of h4x0rs...I know at least one whom the RIAA, not to mention every other mass media conglomerate, would probably want to crucify and hang on a pole in their front lawn as a message to others.

You see, I have this friend named Ross who runs a ridiculously large FTP...

I hope they have fun cracking down on the MILLIONS of people. What are they going to do, sue us all? Yeah, that's a great way to recoup profits.

they're just trying to scare people to stop sharing mp3s. it's not going to happen. even if kazaa goes down, there will be soulseek. and if soulseek goes down, there will be direct connect. and if direct connect goes down, people will resort to ftps and such. there's no way to stop it.

I thought that recording artists make most of their money by playing gigs, and barely get anything from selling albums. So you'd think that if it was about money, pirating music wouldn't be such a big deal.
And you'd think that by giving your music to people for free, this would be a good thing because you're getting more exposure and the message of your (dare I say) art form is more widely communicated?
Man, "artists" these days really lose track of what is important.

you people are assholes. your taking money from the artists. if this continues master p will only be able to afford 3 bentley's instead of 5. and all your favorite rock stars will be living in ghetto 2 million dollar homes instead of that nice 4 million 20 acre mansion on the beach.

if we get rid of rappers money, then they will have nothing at all to rap about. Then we might all get sued by the RAAA for racism. I for one think it is absolutely appaling to want to take any money from deserving acts such as the poet 50 cent. If anything I believe cd prices should be raised to support such fine acts. Come on now, to say that good charlotte doesn't deserve 10 million or so is nearly a sin.

i literally cannot fucking wait till someone on here gets busted this fall for having, like, 4,000 MP3's on his/her computer and goes to prison for 5 years

their methodology is good - they are just going to choose random kids from around the country and prosecute them harshly and put them in federal prison for years and years

what we are doing is blatantly illegal...the law is stupid, yes, b/c the artists make their money from tours, etc etc...who cares? it is against the law, plain and simple, cut and dry, 100% illegal and you can go to prison for it

does it suck? yes
it is constitutional? yes
is file-sharing illegal? yes
are kids going to get busted? yes
will it be you? most likely not, but maybe

What a load of arse

Your pissed off because artists expect to get paid for their work? ... and that the RIAA is trying to look out for their best interests? What an unreasonable pack of cunts expecting to be paid eh?

The music industry works on the basis of exploiting copyright. File sharing is illegal because no money is paid for the copyrighted material. This is stealing.

For those that are confused about how to go about not breaking copyright laws it is very simple - if it's not yours, don't take it or give it away.
