Researchers say trolls enjoy their behaviour

Developed test to spot trolls

Online trolls have serious personality issues such as Machiavellianism, one of the biggest studies into trolling has found.

Researchers say that online commenters display traits that are Narcissistic, psychopathic, and sadistic and the worse the problems, the longer the person spent online.

They found the most common trait was to exhibit sadistic behaviour.

To identify the trolls, researchers even developed a simple online test.

It found only 5.6 percent of survey respondents actually enjoyed 'trolling.'

'Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others,' the team wrote.

'Sadists just want to have fun ... and the Internet is their playground!'

The internet went to complete crap when aol happened. It was a breeding ground for lower level trolls just starting out.. I miss the way the internet used to be when we had a crappy commodore, robotics external modem and got 1 hour a day on the bbs from the sysop.

From my knowledge/memory nobody respected AOLers and they certainly wouldn't be smart enough to use the Internet for something like trolling.

i was on aol because of the chatrooms really, but the last time i used it i was 14 and found netphoria by that point. i know IRC was around for quite a while longer, but all my friends were on AOL and it was sort of like all of us going to the same playground or something.

i used to get into weird shit on there. went into a nambla type room a few times when i was 11 or 12 and cybered with men who were much older than me. wasn't getting off or anything. just bored i guess.
