Just got insurance and am looking for a doctor and...have no idea how to select one, or even narrow it down from this really long list. any tips?

"When i arrived they did not kiss my ass to a degree at which i require, then they had the nerve to ask me to pay before hand. once I saw the doctor i waited for like seriously three minutes and his hands were cold. Also there was a smelly sick man there that was muttering and sick. When I go to the doctor i should not be exposed to sick people. One star."

"Wi-fi in the office is poor, i could not write my important email and i was subsequently demoted. I have thus sued the doctors for not providing wi-fi access in the waiting room so that I could use it as an office for myself. Zero stars."

I can't even trust yelp reviews of restaurants. I imagine customer reviews are largely useless for more serious stuff.

(I don't want to turn this into a yelp thread but holy shit reading those can be infuriating. "MY WATER GLASS WAS EMPTY FOR 6 WHOLE MINUTES AND I DIDN'T EVEN GET A FREE APPETIZER!!!!!!!")

(as somebody who has United Healthcare) i go to the website and see what local docs are under my plan.

its pretty much always a crap shoot, unless youre referred from a friend or co worker or whatever

that particular post was absolutely based on a yelp review i read about one of my favorite burger joints here. The owner responded by saying, essentially, "our restaurant is a place to eat and have drinks, not a mobile office for you to set up in. Further, the reason you couldn't get a good wi-fi signal is because we don't provide one for customers and you were picking up one off one of our neighbors. If you would like to set up your office at someone's business please try one of them." It was great.

it hung out on their yelp account forever too, it was almost a year old when i read it. a review consisting of nothing but griping about a lack of wi-fi, nothing about the food, the ambiance. i fuckin hate yelp. they seriously just handed the keys to awful customers to drive internet reviews for restaurants. and it's filled with that kind of shit about "my glass being empty" or "no wifi" and just a host of spoiled, first world complaining and entitled customer interactions.

there was another where somene went to a truck and got a sandwich and then went to HEB for "only 45 minutes and when i came back the lady was eating my sandwich" that lady was the OWNER OF A FOOD TRUCK. of course she ate your fucking sandwich after 45 minutes she thinks she just lost money. god dammit!!!

it's like when people get notable on yelp they think they are food critics

not to mention the phenomenon that i'm sure is not only known to austin but how "new" and "hip" places shoot up to the top while places that actually serve good food that are not "new" or "hip" get pot shotted by the above.

/yelp rant

i went to a korean restaurant run by three people and i had to wait for my food for about two or three hours. i'm not complaining because it was the best korean in the city but i can't believe the yelp averages were so high. i would think it'd get hammered but it only had one negative review

i've been to some pretty bad restaraunts because of yelp rankings, almost always 95% style, 5% good looking people, 0% quality of food or service. then i went back to not giving a shit. most of the stuff i like gets 4 - 3 1/2 stars because it doesn't serve free range wild hare stuffed with fennel or isn't asian

the top spots on yelp for austin is like 80% asian (viet, thai, sushi, etc) places. for a town made up of lots of honkeys i have trouble believing that.

like if you have a brand new restaurant with modern architecture and you contacted Bad Art, Good Walls for the interior decor then it's auto four star on austin yelp, and climbing.

that's one thing i like about here... usually if a restaurant has a good buzz it's legit. there will be some mediocre restaurants in the cool neighborhoods trying to pass off as a yuppie hot spot but the houston press will tear them up in a review and that's usually a scarlet letter.. its taken pretty seriously in the restaurant scene.

the only thing i don't like is it can be a little too authentic. some of these places if you go in without an asian/indian/Mediterranean (whatever is applicable to the restaurant) person you'll get terrible service. if you get service at all

austin press Chronicle is actually good at food reviews

unfortunately there's also a veritable plague of ultra urban 20-30 something megahipsters that think because they watch the food network that makes them qualified to criticize a restarant in a 12 paragraph article that's mostly about them

austin Yelp: it's like Pitchfork but for food

Ask friends/coworkers/neighbors/random hot chicks at the grocery store. Personal recs are probably the best way to find a dr without knowing one specifically.
