...and that's why you never put liquor in the microwave.

because microwaves don't actually do anything chemical to water?

total nonsense.

http://www.snopes.com/science/microwave/plants.asp

microwaves do nothing to change the chemical structure of water.

i also have to question this 8 year old's methods of experimentation. n = 1 is a very small sample size. in fact, the smallest sample size possible.

My daughter did a science project where she watered one plant with tap water, and another with filtered. The tap watered plant died. I haven't tried microwaved water. The water here smells too bleachy :[

Yeah, as you guys have already mentioned, the test wasn't blinded and the sample size was as small as it could be. But to be honest, I doubt it was an honest (but ill-devised) experiment. It's probably just hoax.

Most likely. This seems like some hippie anarchist or something trying to "prove" the harmful effects of microwaves, oblivious to the fact that while microwaves can in theory denature macromolecules possessing complex structures such as proteins or DNA, water doesn't have any of the aforementioned features and therefore there is no reason that a plant would be killed by microwaved water unless the water was scalding hot when administered to the plant, and therefore testing the effects of pure microwaved water on a plant is simply pointless. Microwaves are on the long wavelength, low energy side of the EMS (opposite gamma rays and x-rays, which have wavelengths close to the size of atoms). All a microwave does is add heat to a system.

So you're saying that a middle school girl did NOT turn the world of science on its head?

This is being spread around by chemophobes/naturalists/libertarians/etc. as some sort of proof that natural = good when it comes to food, or for that matter, anything. It's veiled anti-intellectualism

Ya know, let's just go back to living in trees and forget about rules and shit and all of our problems will go away, that sort of sentiment

Nope, nor are vaccinations, airplanes, napkins, staplers, toenail clippers, refrigerators, hockey pads, tampons, light bulbs, chairs, emergency medicine, aspirin...

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Chemophobia

Here are some interesting comments:

http://www.naturalnews.com/042935_ra...rocessing.html

(note #5: yeah man, fuck antibiotics!)

Everyone's an expert. If you actually follow the science.naturalnews link, the first article is on safety concerns associated with consumption of raw milk, and this is promptly followed by two comments stating that the article is a lie and that the government is opposed to raw milk and therefore it must be a good thing, respectively

Natural: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricin that's just the pop culture example, there are countless cytotoxins found in nature

EVERYTHING is toxic in large enough amounts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication
