It's something of an old rock saying at this point, and that is The Velvet Underground's first album sold only about 30,000 copies, but everyone who heard it started a band...and they didn't wait until the 80's when early MTV gave him some notoriety.

They were managed by Andy Warhol and he would have them play at his showings and parties.

I am so sick of that saying being thrown around.

I have never found a source for the original quote or interview where Brian Eno supposedly said it, and every time the figure for records sold is always different.

* McKenna, Kristine (October 1982). "Eno: Voyages in Time & Perception". Musician magazine. "I was talking to Lou Reed the other day and he said that the first Velvet Underground record sold 30,000 copies in the first five years. The sales have picked up in the past few years, but I mean, that record was such an important record for so many people. I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!"

Thank you Omega Concern for finding the original source of the quote.

The disparity with the number of records quoted still annoys me.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=brian+eno+velve...started+a+band

Also it seems that (just flicking through the first few pages) the articles that were published after Reed's death consistently get the numbers right, or just say "a few" or "not many", whereas before his death there was no consistency to the exact figure.

Compare that to this Google search which shows links created before his death

https://encrypted.google.com/search?...10%2F26%2F2013

The figures are all over the place, none of them cite the source, only one or two mention that the interview was in 1982.

no it doesn't, and there are millions of quotes throughout history that are wrongly attributed, simplified, or otherwise revised

the facts are that VU&N didn't sell that well, and neither did most of VU's work though I think Loaded did alright and had some radio play because that's what it was for

honestly shallowed i think you have an interesting research topic determining how much VU's legacy was bolstered by Lou's solo popularity

it's an excellent point i had not considered

I finally got a chance to check out the Super Deluxe version of White Light/White Heat. There's quite a bit of interesting bonus material and the 3rd disc is a great sounding live show. The instrumental version of "The Gift" sold me entirely.
