His heyday was in the 60's in the The Velvet Underground for christ sakes...most muso's would know of him as well as most of New York City. He was fucking Lou Reed, not Boz Scaggs.

It's probably mostly* thanks to Lou Reed's solo career that anyone listened to The Velvet Underground at all.

*aside from the countless number of musicians that credit the band as being a major influence, but who knows if they would have heard of them either if Lou Reed didn't get big?
