Porch Collapse Kills at Least 12 in Chicago

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A three-story wooden porch crowded with party-goers collapsed Sunday, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more in Chicago, authorities said.
"There was chaos. People were screaming and crying in the alley" when rescuers arrived, Chicago Fire Commissioner James Joyce said.

At the site of the collapse in the upscale Lincoln Park neighborhood, survivors tried to pull victims from a mass of splintered wood and bodies.

"As they got deeper into the pile ... the injuries were more serious," Joyce said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said it had received 12 bodies from the accident, both men and women.

Witnesses estimated as many as 50 people were crowded onto the wooden porch when it collapsed, Joyce said. "It was just too many people," he said.

I just don't understand why all of these bars/clubs are collapsing all of the sudden. Or why they let Great White play and set their building on fire.

The whole club chaos shit is just because too many damn people crowd an area. My best friend worked at E2 where the first thing happened in Chicago, and he said its always packed like that its just terrible. People let underage girls in through the back and eventually everyone does it so it just gets to be too much.

As for the porch thing, Lincoln Park is an area that I'd expect something like that to happen. There are apartments and bars and cafes and shit over there that are mostly balconies and people love to have balcony parties and shit over there, so things just collapse.

This happens at least once a year in Chicago. One of the girls that died went to my high school. It is just sucks. People don't think. Too many people crowd onto a wooden porch and this happens. My leases have had stipulations on the number of people that should be on the porch at any given time. We'll see if they pin something on the owner of the apartment building.

They did have previous code violations, but I don't see how that has anything to do with what I said. I said the reason why people died was because there were too many people there. The reason why too many people were there was because the security would sneak people in.

That would be a code violation. Having too many people is one reason why E2 happened. Another is the lack of exit signage and open available exits (more code violations). It is not as simple as there being too many people.
