One could argue that it's just a matter of taste (and the pop music culture), but to me "shocking", overly sexualized stage performances are an indicator that the singer is more interested to make a career along the lines of "sex sells" than having the desire to make her music the main focus. Although Beyonce, Aguilera, etc. CAN sing, they still go for that, so the argument that they're just not good enough to make it only with voice/songs doesn't work.

I can't figure it out. What is it that drives talented female singers to put a performance in underwear before their music? Add a little shock value without any connection to the song?

I don't buy that it's not their decision and they're all slaves of the patriacharal music business - there must be more to it.

Because on the other side you have female artists who don't take that path. They don't sell as many albums, but since when is making music just about that?

Excuse my rambling, this is just something I fail to understand.
When I listen to some random 13 year old girls (and younger), I don't hear "I want to become an artist because I love singing and music." It's "I want to be a diva."

When I grew up it wasn't that hard to monitor my media influences. No 24/7 internet on mobile phones, no MTV, limited access to TV in general. A hard judgement on certain music magazines, so looking at pictures of "questionable" stars and reading BRAVO was done secretly.

The thought of raising a kid without a chance to block these "idols" is frightening to me.

She was the one I admired - for her voice and I found her cool in general.

I was at a party last night and there was this feral dude there whonobody invited but nobody could get to leave and he was just drunkenly rambling about some hippie shit about how identity is a plague and we should just live in one huge commune and how the squat he was living in was so great.
