we are all driven by biology, in fact the social ill that creates these problems is the fact that we have compassion for each other and don't let the blind sad ones get attacked by lions
if you're trying to diagnose mental illness via capitalism/sexism/post industrial society you're thinking too hard. we are meat robots beep bop boop. seriously it's just chemical impulses, self-actualization is a myth, self-consciousness is a delusion. the mentally ill, infirm and etc of other species are often left to die or meet an unfortunate end in some way ![]() Last edited by Trotskilicious : 07-29-2013 at 01:58 PM. |

The question is, where does biology turn into "emotions" and "behaviors"?
And is it possible to change your current biology (neurotransmitter transmission, mostly) by changing your reactions to emotions, environmental triggers, etc? It seems possible and personally I think I've seen it in myself - for some people. But depression and anxiety are a different beast from something like Schizophrenia, and low functioning psychotic people (and others like those with select severe personality disorders and other low functioning symptoms) are in no way going to be seriously helped by therapy (at least most of them). But people forget that and go OMG SSRIS = devil!!! There is a huge group of mentally ill people that simply are not capable of getting better with therapy. And then there is the impact of trauma, which is severely overlooked and not understood by many mental health professionals. And SSRIs are not the only form of medication and indeed many people try other things, even those with textbook "depression" that "should" be helped by SSRIs. So does trauma affect your current biology? Undoubtedly, but that doesn't mean therapy can make your nuerotransmisson go back to baseline - even if you process all of your trauma. It could be permanent, and there is still a lot of research to be done w/r/t this. |

I've been on Zoloft for over two weeks now. Lightheadedness and headaches that I had for the last month I was on Prozac are now gone.
I have started to feel a little bit off, though. Kind of dull. Sort of like my brain isn't processing as quickly as it was before. Like my processor speed has slowed. Maybe that's good. When I'm experiencing bad anxiety my mind seems to race out of control. |
