Default i really hate it when people say UH HUH! while you're talking

like are you listening or making affirmative noises to pretend you're listening

never thought much about it. but seeing as i am now, i'd say it's only rude when one is not engaged in the conversation and saying uh huh.

otherwise, ain't no thang. the instinct to make affirmative noises in response to communication probs isn't even that unique anyway.

*squawk*

and i mean WHILE you're talking, obvs.

i mean if someone says something, finishes talking you can go "UH HUH!" "SURE!" "OKAY!" and etc

but not WHILE they're talking

I def say uh huh or nod when I'm not listening to someone. This is designed to encourage that person to either stop talking or be more interesting.

I hate it when people who I rarely ever talk to are walking past me and they say "hi, how's it going". It happens all the time in my office.

Do they expect that I stop, turn around, catch up to them and give them an update on my day? No they don't. So why ask? Why not say just say "hello" if you're going to keep walking in the opposite direction?

"How ya doing" is basically the same as "Hello". Depends on the place and context.

When I worked at my old job, I said hi or hello. At the bank I and the customers walking past me say "hi howyadoin" almost as a habit. No on expects a response but if there is its always "good".

Walking around irl not at a job, I just nod and/or smile, smirk when I pass people. If a woman smiles at my daughter and i, it's usually becAuse I'm like engaging with my daughter or talking to her and they probably find it cute, I just smile.

I dunno life is hard Scotty

i should explain a bit more

i take phone calls, answering questions about this thing i do and it will remain mysterious because i hate you netphoria

but anyway you get a call from someone, they have a question. I indeed have an answer, and when i'm giving them the answer they are interjecting UH HUH! OKAY! SURE! every few moments while i'm answering them and i just feel like they're going to call me back next week with the same question because they were really just pretending to listen to the answer and in fact understood none of it, and that's why they're calling me with this basic fucking question in the first damn place

i mean the number of times the real answer is "you weren't listening to the webinar/meeting/training session (and you're not listening now)" or "you need to read more carefully" is astronomical

but i have to be all HAI!!! ^_^

i don't even open my mouth sometimes and just say mmhmm. i think i only really do this, though, when engaging in a semi-serious to serious conversation. my eyes get expressive, i sporadically nod, and i say mmhmm (especially when i know what they mean, but don't want to interrupt with 'yeah, i know what you mean' - and mmhmm sounds better than a grunt).

I tend to get really eerily quiet when I'm listening intently, a few noises of recognition or empathy might not hurt my cause

I do this and I like it when people do it when I am talking. if someone is dead silent while I'm talking I have a tendency to stop frequently and see if they are bored or not listening

actually, these days i seem to use "mmm" as my affirmation noise. last year i stayed in a place with a japanese couple for several weeks; they did this and i think it has rubbed off on me. i sometimes wonder if it's annoying to others.

I think it's kind of rude and I only do it when I kind of want to the person to shut the fuck up.

So, almost everyday
