Okay, the last episode was not bad at all. The scene in the diner though was.... strange. Weirdly edited, weird choice of music, very odd. I'm just glad that fucker Phil Leotardo got it.

the scene goes back and forth from front door perspective to tony's perspective

last camera placement is front door and then it goes back to tony's perspective, which is black.

David Chase said in interviews that year that Tony didn't die at the end of the last episode. That the intention of the last scene was to convey a sense of impending doom and dread. It was a way to show the audience that for the Soprano family the other shoe was always about to drop, that because of their mob ties they were never really safe, whether that meant being gunned down, arrested, etc. Chase wanted the audience to feel that kind of dread right at the last moment that the show was on the air. But his intention was not for people to assume it meant Tony died.

The evidence is definitely there if you choose to interpret the cut to black as Tony being shot, but that's not entirely the point. The audience is being "whacked", that's the bigger point. Death can literally come for us at any second, and we' would never know it happened. The point is Tony either died there in the diner, went to prison and died like Johhny Sack, avoided prison and went insane like Junior, or simply lived the rest of his days in the same house completely unchanging, always "waiting for the other show to drop", miserable and ultimately alone.
