President Obama next week will take the political risk of formally proposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget in an effort to demonstrate his willingness to compromise with Republicans and revive prospects for a long-term deficit-reduction deal, administration officials say.
The entire power of the presidency comes down now to the president's ability to "demonstrate his willingness to compromise" with a bunch of vandals and yahoos, many of whom think Jim DeMint is too soft on the moochers. Exactly what is this supposed to accomplish? What is the purpose of the demonstration? The Democrats are going to go up the wall, and the Republicans are going to ask for more and more "demonstrations" of the president's willingness to compromise until he has shown himself willing to compromise us back to 1922. Who is the demonstration supposed to convince? David Brooks? This is crazy. This is wrong. It is government by Beltway dumbshow. It is awful politics and worse policy.
Mr. Obama's proposed deficit reduction would replace those cuts. And if Republicans continue to resist the president, the White House believes that most Americans will blame them for the fiscal paralysis.
No. Stop. Really. You guys are killing me. The American people are going to look at a Democratic president's selling out the cornerstones of eighty years of Democratic social policy and blame the Republicans because they won't help him do it? I can write the "Stop Obama's Raid On Social Security" ads for the 2014 midterms in my sleep. In addition, wasn't this also the logic behind the sequester? How's that working out?

funny stuff. well someone needs to be the grownup in the room.

In what universe is that a 'cut'?

He's also going after retirement accounts.

Obama's budget limits how much someone can keep in IRAs, Roths,, 401ks, etc..

He also is pushing banks to ease loan requirements for homebuyers. Funny, his policy is nearly identical to the one democrats killed Bush and the GOP for years ago

Good times!

Wouldn't surprise me if he did, but I don't know if he ever did. Bad policy is bad policy. The banking bullshit is incomprehensible.

It stems from the Clinton years when they lowered banking regs, but Dems put tons of Blane (rightfully) on Bush for doing nothing to tighten them.

Retarded politics that increases likelihood of something horrible actually passing. I mean we are counting on the repubs being incredibly stupid to save us from democratic proposed cuts. Single payer/public option idiocy all over again.

An argument could be made that he knew they wouldnt be into passing it. Its a stupid argument that ignores the damage done simply by proposing the cuts. The gain in that case is minimal and it really benefits no one, except Obama. This is his grand bargain, unity utopia legacy bullshit that hes wanted since forever. Shared sacrifice!

i believe the clinton spin on that is yes they were lowered, but Bush didnt even enforce what was in place.

Keeping Bernake in the transition from Bush is among the most infuriating things Obama has done. It gives credence to TOCs rants about about shady back rooms with men holding guns to the presidents head.

I mean how bad do you have to fuck up to lose your job.

Well Obama is eerily similar in economic policy to Bush, so yeah.

i don't know if i'd blame the 08 crash much on bernanke's end (though technically you could, it was 2 years after he was appointed). but even so he also had a hand in preventing a global meltdown. i don't really like obama's "you break it you fix it" mentality regarding his economic appointments but its worked

But there's Obama talking about cutting Social Security.

Social Security has nothing to do with the budget deficit. Cutting it won't reduce the deficit by a single dollar. The only reason the wingnutz want to cut it is for the sake of cutting it. They want it done away with and they'll do it incrementally if they have to.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say the 'cuts' they are proposing are actually reductions in gains. The Baseline Budgeting trick these scammers have been pulling for decades.

Budget a 10 to 12% increase for a government program, roll it 'back' to 6% increase from the year before....call that a 'cut' when you've still spent more money than the year before.

This is why Democrats have always sucked and are demagogic losers who can only prey on the ignorant.

but whatever...

S.S. is the biggest Ponzi scheme in history and Big Guv is in overdrive trying to kill off as many people as possible before the onslaught of Boomers start collecting. They have no interest in fixing the economic side, that would disrupt the eugenics plan.

Barney Frank found enough time to take a dick out of his mouth and threaten to yell racism any time a bank refused to loan money to someone who obviously couldn't pay it back.

liberal logic deems that's racism.
