A month, now. I started on the 1st of January. I've had two interviews so far. Neither of them were successful though the first one, the guy really liked me and called me back to make sure I didn't want the job before he re-listed it (I didn't, it didn't pay enough to make it worth it, after transport and child care costs), and said he would email me about the other job he talked about, so I might hear back from him again. The music school I applied to said the position had been filled but that they would keep me on file in case anything else came up so something might happen there, too. And there's a job for a family worker coming up at my church. Plus they pay organists so I'll earn a tiny bit there.

My girlfriend was unemployed for 1 year here in the UK. She was overqualified academically, but had little work experience. She did get a couple of interviews over the year, but they always picked a more experienced candidate, even if they didn't have a degree. After a while, she started applying for random, unqualified jobs, but never heard back from any of them. I assume there were flocks of people applying, since unemployment is high.

Then I got a better job down south, we moved, and she found a job within a month. But that whole year was kind of miserable, and it had very little to do with her actual skills. She's more knowledgeable and intelligent than the people who didn't hire her, but they had no way of knowing that.
