i think there certainly is a spectrum but one with an x and y axis and not just x (which would be a continuum)

i don't see them as cut and dry separate at all

each shapes the other whether you like it or not. and one can be reasonable while the other is not at the same time

for example sometimes i can feel like someone is attacking my character when they are just being nominally critical and although i know logically that is the case, i still feel shame or whatever, and knowing i'm feeling things about something that isn't actually happening helps but does not take away the shame

not the best example, sorry.

shame seems to imply yet another axis – global vs. specific, insofar as one's character is concerned (with guilt being the other extreme in this case)

anyway, i think we're in agreement here. brains are messy things

Thanks jonny. I always thought you were mean/funny so I couldn't help but like you even when it seemed like you didn't like me.

I discovered Eastern philosophy when Keanu Reeves starred in Little Buddha. That was in the mid 90s. Then my Dad rolled his eyes at me and told me I'd be better off reading Hesse's Siddhartha. Took me a few years to read that. When I was 18 I nearly joined the local Krsna consciousness group on a whim. I kept going there for a while and read a bit of the Bavaghad Gita (my Dad had a copy of that as well) and the Sri mad Bhavagitam. Right before I went into hospital when I was 20 I had borrowed a book called Introducing Buddhism...you know, it's a series...you can get Introducing Chomsky and stuff like that. They have cartoons. That was when I was living in this dive in Prahran. Anyway. I started reading a book by the Dalai Lama then, too.

So yeah, a little familiar. Not very well read but a little bit.

I'm working on myself through Eastern philosophy at the moment, my psychologist is teaching me about mindfulness, acceptance, breathing exercises, sitting with feelings and allowing them to exist. That kind of stuff. So it is happening.

Being a mother of 2 young boys with no family support and no high school or uni friend's nearby can be pretty hard. I think most people would strugge not to lose their temper, especially when their marriage needed work as well. It is what it is. Most of the time I'm ok but when I'm breaking up the 6th fight in an hour because they are deliberately winding each other up and hitting each other and climbing on the furniture sometimes I yell and get angry for a few seconds.

yeah shame is not the best example, as i'm not even sure if i'd call it a feeling. guilt is a feeling - i feel bad for doing something. shame is like, i don't know, i'm a bad person - something like that. so guilt is i did bad shame is i am bad. so shame does seem "global" vs guilt being "specific" - which i think is what you meant and in that case i agree
