I think what i use my phone for the most is the gps, internet, kindle app, and soundhound. pandora is an excellent portable radio, too.

I have an htc, I've rooted it and installed a custom ROM to get more internal storage. I like it. I find the whole app thing a bit tedious though, I end up uninstalling most of them because I never use them.

I know lots of people without smartphones here is Australia. I wish smartphones had never been invented. I'm sitting here at the breakfast table with a beautiful view out the window but I don't feelquite right unless I have my iPhone in front of me sucking away minutes of my life i'll never get back. It's like a sickness. I try not to use it but then I sit down to check my email and half an hour later I'm still tapping away on this tiny fucking screen. Hopeless.

i like my iphone. huge help while travelling, mobile email saves time elsewhere (better use of time replying to people on the bus or while waiting for coffee etc. than at home/work), rdio + music apps mean i can listen to basically any music i want, and the reeder and kindle apps mean i always have something to read. vastly prefer it to carrying around a clamshell phone, an ipod and a palm pda, which is what i used to do

i've never had any compulsion to look at it while with other people, though. it's inconsiderate enough to pull out your phone as soon as a text message arrives. if it's important, they'll call – otherwise, keep talking to the person who's made time to be with you ffs

I cancelled my cell phone three years ago. haven't regretted it, wouldn't even want a free one. it was as flip top from 2002.

I deal with musicians all the time, and they're just the worst people in the world when it comes to scheduling. Having a phone meant I kept getting calls to modify plans at the last minute. That and "Hey i'm just calling to let you know i'm going to be late" about 2 mins before the person is due to show up. fucking clowns.
Since I don't have a phone it's easier to be clear ahead of time that if they're late I might just have to leave and I'll deal with them on another day. Last minute plans are rarely interesting enough to offset the dredges or improve the quality of my life.

for some reason not having a phone reenforces peoples misconception that i'm a drug dealer. Maybe someone here can explain it to me because that always sounds backwards to me.

cell phones are traceable, therefore a drug-dealer would steer clear of one? But then again they have pay-by-the-minute/pre-paid phones available so I dunno. Someone who has watched The Wire could probably tell you for sure.

the last few events i've been at with a few people (thanksgiving, new years, couple parties) there were several times where i was the only person in the group not on their cell phone texting or on facebook. a good time to reflect.

All but two of the phones that I've had previously belonged to either my mother or her mother. Never owned a smartphone.

Reprise,

If you do want to get into a smartphone cheap....check out Republic Wireless. they only have one phone choice, but it's as cheap as most basic cell service plans. Their phones piggyback on wifi where it's available and Sprint when you're roaming.

http://republicwireless.com/

I have a friend who just got one and says it works fairly well for him and only costs him $35 per month (including the data plan). the only catch is that you have to buy the phone, but there's no service agreement so you can cancel anytime you want.

I really don't think that the device makes people shitty simply due to the introduction and increased familiarity of it, I mean, people haven't changed as a result. We are all just as human as ever.
