together with Wolf's Law, the first three tracks from the new album sound mostly like they could have come from the previous album or ep

Doesn't have the immediacy that Whirring or A Heavy Abacus has but still pretty coll.

musically not that interesting. Nice to see they haven't moved on at all from album 1.

if the rest of the album sounds like this I'll buy it. Still good music.

also, female lead is automatically cool

i sense limitations in musicianship from the girl and thus the band. Not a terrible thing necessarily, but for an art-rock proggy type group its not a great sign. I like whatsherface plenty, but maybe its too much to expect her to expand her sound (and chops) when she's already maxed out the dissonance by playing a Line6 flextone II and hasn't moved from it...fine stick with Line-6, but use the HD-147, at least that has some balls.

Outside of the duck/quack sound in that one intro, nothing new or innovative as yet from 2nd album. oh wells.

Another band that arrived fully formed with their debut album, with nowhere to go afterwards. Whatever happened to developing/exploring your sound (and losing the trademarks of your most obvious influences) over the first 2 LPs before really finding your unique identity around album 3?

It's been almost two years since The Big Roar came out and a lot of people still seem interested

Probably because they thought they might do something new with it. Don't get me wrong, i like their music, but it's pretty disposable.

I don't mind when an artist does more of the same stuff that they're known for, as long as the songs are interesting. I guess they're running out of steam.

i'll give this album a few spins. I did like the song from Twilight and would like to hear the guy sing a few tunes as well. nitpicking would be she still has this nursery rhyme cadence to her lyric patterns that's kinda frequent. she writes in her key pretty well, which is smart since its alt-rock and which is also why I'd wish she'd mix in a Gibson or some tube amps, analog delay, sumtin...

are you saying she only writes in one key?

not exclusively, no. but the main is the middling key of F in a 3 octave range, not that I've ever sat at the piano with her. She's not a vocalist like Grimes, who can cover a wide range of emotions with her voice and create depth in an album that way, so they rely on guitar driven effects for the width and air of their sound, which is usually nice, but I thought their strength was in their arrangements and approach and these two new songs kinda fall flat in that regard to me (mmmmmaybe they've tapped out those emotions in those keys now...maybe not), but I usually like to be fair and hear an album as presented. Maybe these songs make more sense in the context of it all.
