Default Any of you guys done/doing grad school?

I'm definitely going for it, just preparing myself mentally. Right now, there is so much focus on getting into somewhere relatively prestigious that I sometimes forget the actual research and work will be the hardest part. This semester will be a good test of my fortitude since it entails 5 classes, 3 of which are relatively difficult, and I'm also tutoring for one class and leading a seminar for another in addition to working at a bookstore on weekends. Next semester, I'll be helping with a research project as well.

Basically I'm just looking for advice/stories, etc., also reasons I'm an inbred faggot and other standard fare

Chemistry - skipping the masters, doing the doctorate, since tuition is covered and a stipend is entailed. Was surprised to learn that most chemists go right into doctorate programs and furthermore that this was even a possibility

I hated orgo

I did a master's in public health during med school, they were both great I think the one complimented the other (combined program). I would recommend it

If you go straight out of college it feels like a bit of a continuation of college with the right group of people. I felt lucky to have the classmates I did, although of course the amount of studying shoots up quite a bit. If you take time off or go to a smaller program with older folks who have had other jobs or are married and what not it might be a little different

How did you go about selecting your school? Did you get accepted to multiple schools and then choose one?

Physical chem is my problem... some people love calculus, though. I don't get it. What did you end up doing?

I've heard from friends who worked in the real world a while and returned to academia that it can be frustrating because of its frequent impracticality, although I think social sciences are more to blame in this. It sounds like you're involved in research and classes now so the transfer to the grad school ivory tower won't be too different, especially not in a hard science

Sometimes that's the absolute right choice. School is overrated, unless it's really necessary to your career aspirations

School is not overrated, learning is not overrated. Every class at any college is beneficial to at least one career field.

What it costs for a 4 year degree in some states is the only thing that is overrated.

i did a one-year masters program in architectural acoustics. it was probably not anything like a chemistry phd curriculum.
