Let's talk about mysterious disappearances!

On September 3, 1873, a man named James Worson had accepted a challenge to race, in record time, from the town of Leamington to the town of Coventry, a 20-mile trek. He had been boasting of his foot skills and then was asked to prove them, so, with sporting good spirits, he set about to do just that.

Two friends, Hammerson Burns and Barham Wise, followed behind in a horse-drawn gig. Burns brought along his camera. Worson was never out of their sight, and would often turn around while running to exchange some friendly words with the two riders. Running in the middle of the road, Worson suddenly appeared to stumble and pitch forward, having time enough for only one short, piercing scream.

Wise later said, “It was the most ghastly sound either of us had ever heard.”

But as Worson pitched forward with that terrible cry, instead of falling to the ground as he appeared to be about to have done, he completely and totally vanished in mid-fall, before ever striking the ground.

The road itself told the story and Wise took the pictures to prove it. There, in the soft dirt, were Worson’s footprints.They led down the middle of the road, looked as if the runner stumbled, and there they disappeared.

A search was called and the locals scoured the area for James. The bloodhounds used in the search were strangely reluctant to approach the spot where Worson disappeared.

He was never seen or heard from again.

Szilveszter Matuska (January 29, 1892 – disappeared c. 1945), was a Hungarian mass murderer and mechanical engineer who made two successful and at least two unsuccessful attempts to derail passenger trains in Hungary, Germany and Austria in 1930 and 1931. He was born in Csantavér (now Čantavir, Serbia).

Matuska made at least two failed attempts to derail trains in Austria in December 1930 and January 1931.

Matuska's first successful crime was the derailment of the Berlin-Basel express train south of Berlin on August 8, 1931. Scores of people were injured, but there were no deaths. Because of the discovery of a defaced Nazi newspaper at the scene of the crime, among other things, the attack was believed to have been politically motivated. A bounty of 100,000 reichsmark was put on the perpetrator.

Matuska's second and more notorious successful crime was the derailment of the Vienna Express headed towards Vienna as it was crossing the Biatorbágy bridge near Budapest at 12.20am on 13 September 1931. 22 people died and 120 others were injured, 17 of them severely.

Matuska carried out his crime by blowing up a portion of the bridge, causing the engine and nine of the eleven coaches forming the train to plunge into a ravine 30 meters deep. Matuska was discovered at the scene of the crime but, having passed himself off as a surviving passenger, he was released. Investigators in the three countries were on his trail, however, and he was arrested in Vienna one month later, on 10 October 1931, whereupon he soon confessed.

Matuska was tried and convicted in Austria for two unsuccessful attempts. He was later extradited to Hungary on condition that he not be executed. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment as agreed with Austria.

Matuska reportedly escaped from jail in Vác in 1944. According to some reports, he served as an explosives expert during the latter stages of World War II; he was never recaptured and his fate is unknown. Rumours have circulated that he appeared on the communist side in the Korean War, but there is no evidence to support this.

Matuska's motives remain unclear. His first attack was initially thought to have been politically motivated. At his trial, Matuska claimed to have been ordered to derail the express by God. Matuska has also been quoted as explaining his crimes by saying: "I wrecked trains because I like to see people die. I like to hear them scream." It was reported that he achieved orgasm while watching the trains he had sabotaged crash.

Not convinced there is a correlation between taking it out and no activity, though.

That's good. We had something happen here last night. I kept hearing a cracking noise down by the landing, then heard footsteps on the stairs. Part of me wanted to go look, but the other is afraid of what I may see. :]

Yeah, I feel ya. Our hallway door slammed shut this afternoon and, even though I knew it was because we had all the windows open and air pressure,etc, I still didn't want to check it out.

I did, but I was hella nervous.

Time: evening
Two local peasants (possibly slightly inebriated) were returning to their village south of present day Moscow on the banks of the River Moskva when they decided to take a short cut through the bottom of a deep gully. Unexpectedly as both men walked between two huge stones they fell down some kind of corridor apparently into some parallel reality or world. There they saw large hairy humanoid entities that communicated with them and explained to them that they had indeed slipped into another dimensional space and that it would be difficult for them to return back to their plane, but they would attempt to assist the men in doing just that. After some time both peasants found themselves back in the gully and immediately ran to their village but to their surprise more than 20 years had gone by since they had initially disappeared. Luckily some of their relatives still remained in the village and remembered them. The men thought that they had only been gone no more than one day. The police intervened in the manner and interrogated the men, incredibly while being interview in front of the police and other local citizens one of the men suddenly disappeared without a trace. The second man fell into a deep depression after seeing his friend disappear and later committed suicide.
