Default how early to get to the airport

hey gang.

so i haven't flown very much in my life and i know within canada or within the usa to typically give about 90 minutes or so.

so as far as overseas goes, i've heard to get to the airport 3 hours early. true? what about international flights within europe (ie stockholm to amsterdam). how early should i get there for something like that?

for international flights through a major airport (if you don't know the airport)... at least 2 hours. 3 is better. I've never had much trouble going through Shiphol in The Netherlands, but I've gotten stuck in huge lines at Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt and almost missed my plane.

If you're flying home with a layover/connecting flight, make sure your layover connection is more than an hour between flights. You'll need time to go through US customs before getting on your next flight. that includes passport check AND picking up your luggage and rechecking it for your domestic connecting flight. I've been stuck in line at customes for well over an hour a number of times.

you'll still need to hit customs. I spent 45min in line when entering canada at Vancouver once. just depends on whether your flight lands at the right or wrong time.

thanx caic. i appreciate it.

my flight from uk back to canada is gonna be the worst. 7:50am at gatwick.... i'm going to have to be in a cab before 4am. it was either that or pay an extra 700+/person to fly out of heathrow at a reasonable time :-/

You're a Toronto person right? (Creepy sounding, but remember your kind advice when we went there last summer... hence the dropping of that info)

We flew home to Utah on an early morning flight from YYZ and the customs line was MAJORLY long. Seemed to take forever... but then again, lines in airports always do. Test of the one's ability to be patient.

In related news, somebody around us in line really smelled like shit. I mean, not a gnarly fart... but actual turd. It was brutal.

i don't think you can check in any earlier than two hours before departure, so there isn't much point in showing up earlier.

i believe i rode a pony once.

haha, not creepy. pretty much everyone knows i'm from toronto. i actually thought of you when i went to the island a couple weeks ago.

we're flying out of YYZ at 9:10 so we're gonna show up around 6ish. i have a feeling it'll be mega busy, as it's the friday before canadian thanksgiving weekend (which isn't as big a deal here as it is in the usa) just after work.

"Did you finally nail YYZ?"
"It's Y-Y-ZED and no, it's impossible. Neal Peart stands alone."
