there's a push to have pedophilia reclassified to inclde both what we would now call pedophilia and hebephelia and those who are attracted to both pre-pubescent children and pubescent ones (but not post-/late pubescent, like the example 17 year old)

either way, this is one of those diagnoses like anti-social personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder where it offers no excuse for crimes committed and will not be admissible as any kind of contributing cause to a crime that deserves leniency or not guilty by reason of insanity. it is not a crime to be a pedophile or a psychopath, but act on it and you are a piece of shit

this is a controversial opinion, but getting it in the DSM will theoretically allow insurance companies to pay for treatment - hopefully before anyone acts on their urges. if more pedophiles/hebephiles were able to get help, less offending would happen. but again we have no way to know how many people have these urges and never act them out, because it's such a taboo that we can assume the vast majority of those who don't also never get help or tell anyone

all of that doesn't really answer the question of is it a mental disorder or not. i think i'd go with yes but i'm not decided

i mean i knew a person who was both a pedophile and hebephile and a psychopath and narcissist and he was certainly mentally ill but knew right from wrong and just didn't care/got glee from it
