but of course, if you don't believe in this, it's also an organisation that spends a shitload of money on the things that jackal guy mentioned.
1. You lost me at "securing salvation"

2. A big part of the money they spend could be put to better use if their beliefs weren't shit (I.e. condoms spread HIV in Africa)

it's hilarious how religious people are always fucking incapable of bringing anything to its logical conclusion, they always just hit the wall of "well we disagree" or "that's just how I feel"

not sure how protestants venerate saints moreso than catholics, however. at least here in the states i would say it's the direct opposite.

actually I think I misread cocksure's post. he probably just meant that protestants teach that the church is the collection of all christians on earth, which is what I was taught.

Yeah, samesies.

They taught it as "a sainthood of all believers" where none is held to a higher level than anyone else

I think religion is an organization of values and cultural codes and philosophies, things like that, which can come together to form a very poetic aesthetic whole. I think it facilitates communication and connection between people, is a basis for community (the likes of which simply do not exist in our culture anymore outside of churches), helps people focus on the collective good and their own higher principles and, of course, gives a deeper meaning and beauty to daily life. that's just offhand.

if you're in love with individualism and postmodernism I can see it holding no appeal, however.

It's actually pretty rational. I know what we need more of is "FUCK CHRISTIANZ THERE ALL BAD GUYZ" but Charmbag makes a legit point.

If I understand what is being said, Charmbag is saying that religion helps some people "focus on the collective good", etc. Charmbag isn't saying that without religion, that wouldn't exist.

I read some experiences of religion on Erowid and it sounds like something everyone should try at least once in their life.

I'd prefer they were semantically challenged. Accepting the meaning of words without any further investigation sounds pretty boring to me. Thinking about words is very valuable IMO. But you can keep feeling sorry for them if you like. Sounds like a waste of emotional energy to me but if you have nothing more fulfilling to invest in emotionally, I guess...go for it.
