nate silver seems to think the importance of a running mate is overstated but i don't think that applies to this election when people hate both candidates and want "somebody else" and they'll be dumb enough to ignore the top of the ticket this time.

anyway he says VP picks help their home states by about 2% on average then he lists the candidates favorability, then an average of which one would cause each outcome in the electoral college (but this ignores what effect each candidate would have on other states. i for one would think rubio would add more than just FL EVs)

btw for the sake of leaving no stone left unturned, there's also murmurs of cathy mcmorris http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy_McMorris_Rodgers

people seem to keep passing that name up

No one gives a crap about the VP when they vote, so who cares.

I dont see why they should be panicking. If he starts doing worse in the swings maybe.

but obama's ahead in every swing state right now. of course he won't win them all but that should be troubling when obama can lose vital states like ohio and florida and virginia and still eke his way to 272 votes (kerry states plus iowa, new mexico and colorado, which because of demographic changes since 2004 are more or less safe in the democrat column now)

i'm not saying anybody should PANIC but i don't get a sense from RNC ground troops i know personally and conservatives in general that romney's path to winning is narrow as it is. it seems like a modern dewey vs. truman to me but at a somewhat lesser extent

Guess I'm just not sure how much of this matters until after the convention. Everything seen so far seems fairly lame to me.

edit: lame in terms of lasting damage to either side

it would've been considerably closer if it werent for the lehman collapse. mccain was behind throughout the entire election except for the time he announced the pick up to the sept 13th crash

well the tide was definitely against the GOP

i don't think it's impossible to think that a character not unlike sarah palin could push a milquetoast republican over the top

She was a Hail Mary. John McCain was in a position to lose, so he had no reason not to take a big risk.

In theory she was a decent pick, however she had nothing valuable to offer to the McCain/conservative message, and her lack of experience shone brighter than Barack's.

there is no theory on earth where she is a decent pick for a general election in 50 states. she had no experience (at at time when McCain was saying his opponent had no experience). she was a bad public speaker. she came from a state with very few electoral votes and few big money doners. there were other wingnutz that could have carried water for Walnuts McCain and done a better job of it.

she was bad from day one. and her selection as a running mate made Walnuts McCain look like a jack ass.

it wasn't just the economy that sank him. it was a combination of things that made for a poorly run campaign. Namely that he was unable to move the focus of the election away from a referendum on 8 years of republican rule.

even if the economy hadn't tanked when it did he wouldn't have beat Obama with the campaign he was running. People were fed the fuck up with Bush and the republican party. And McCain looked like a tired old out of touch man who couldn't even staff his own campaign with qualified people
