the first public displaying of my photos is tonight. all my prints turned out really dark and i'm not impressed. but the other photographers featured suck balls, so perhaps mine will look decent in contrast.

Did you not get the chance to proof them? Getting the print right is often the hardest part of the photographic process. Best of luck with your show!

these photos were taken at a small town music festival in a big tent in the middle of a downtown street. good rented lighted. the metal shots were shot at a hockey rink with rented lights. all the rockabilly/burlesque shots that appear to be well lit were in a dark bar, but can get decent shots with 3200/6400 iso at f/1.4. other shots are in bars with shit light as you mention, but i work with them the best i can.

you shoot at 3200/6400 iso with such a fast lens?

That must make life very easy indeed ;-)

I made another tintype of him and his wife (a pretty cool Argentinian photographer):

That's extremely clean for a tintype - sometimes I think I've got too precise with it, and it removes some of the charm. Below is an image that his wife made - her first attempt at the process:

Yep, images are made in reverse. It means once when you show a sitter a tintype you've just made of them it's the same view that they get when they look in the mirror.
