Byrne's major problem I think is his body and arms movement is way too big. If you fling sticks around to each and every hit and swing your body to every beat like that, simply it's physically impossible to express subtlety and dynamics. In such a playing style, every hit becomes a bang, slow and quiet part just gets dull & boring, and you miss or derail the beat and cannot catch up with the rhythm if play fast & complex.

Jimmy on the other hand plays as if nothing is going on there. His arms, hands and sticks make smallest movement possible, and travel all over the drum kit sleek and silky. His body is planted solid. Jimmy makes big motion, either sticks/arms or body, only when it matters. Maybe one can call it slow hands or slow drumming, and that's why and how he can achieve such awesome dynamics, express subtlety and play very fast and complex fills.

That's what Mike lacks and has to learn and master, imo.

However I think Mike is quite creative actually, in his own way, and good way. Often I feel like he's struggling to express what he's hearing/creating in his head, suppressing it, lacks confident and playing it safe, ending up clumsy playing or fail. If he can recognize and address his issues, by learning himself or preferably by taking a proper lesson from good mentor, he might be able to transform himself into quite awesome drummer. I think he has potential. All up to him tho, and probably to BC as well to great extent... we'll see.

How did I know this thread was going to turn into a teardown of Mike?

Oh, right, because he sucks. I don't care if he has potential or not. He sucks *now*. For the love of God, get rid of him already!

Mike is not going anywhere. Billy has invested and talked him up and he seems to believe in the kid. Billy is not an idiot. He knows that Mike is nowhere near the level of Jimmy, unfortunately Jimmy doesn't want anything to do with Billy right now so we're stuck with him. Maybe down the road he'll ask Matt Walker to join but I think the current lineup will last a few more years before he tries something else.

Quote from a new interview (Triple J):

Billy Corgan:
"I think this group of people is probably the last band I'll ever be in..."

So? How many times has Billy said shit like that? He also said that SP was breaking up for good once upon a time. He also once said that he was going to stop playing all of his old songs. He just says shit. A lot can change in a few years.
