Default Let's talk about the 1998 version of X.Y.U.

best jam they've ever done I think. It's especially cool considering it was right at the end of the Adore Tour.

The lyrics are absolutely psychotic however, and truly a confirmation of how loony Billy is. It's like a sick murder fantasy in audible form. It's part of what makes him a good songwriter (that is, being so all over the place in terms of his emotions and such), but seriously, as I get older it's hard to listen to that and not say "wow, this is really fucked up".

It was also pretty amazing to see Billy tweet that this is his favorite studio performance, given that he writes sappy religious lyrics now. What kind of person would be comfortable in having such a good relationship with god and blah blah but then still be okay with turning around and saying "I still love this song I wrote about murdering someone, it's my fav performance!" I know he wasn't talking about the 1998 version but still.

Also, didn't he play the song during charity concerts for kids and such? What kind of sick fuck would do that?

He's just crazy, but more of an inept twat now.

also, have you never had a revenge murder fantasy? it's not like i have them every day but it's not necessarily a bad thing or the sign of a really fucked up person. he put it in his music instead of actually doing anything and that's a healthy thing

i always thought x.y.u. had enormous potential to be an epic pumpkins anthem, but it's an unfinished song, they just had to spend more time working on it

Yeah it's healthy to put your negative if not violent thoughts into a song rather than a real act, but ugh... young impressionable kids don't necessarily get that etc. Bad influence. I know it makes me sound like a twat, but I guess as I get older I can see what some parents mean about music and how it can change the way people think.

Now... a song compelling someone to actually commit murder, rape, etc. means there's a bigger problem psychologically, but a 12 year old kid listening to a song like this really isn't a good thing regardless. And I had MCIS when I was around that age so it's not like I'm just talking out of my ass here.

Really? You think it's just a rant against a shitty girlfriend? He wants to cause her great bodily harm if not end her life. It's completely psychotic.

hearing things about murder doesn't make people want to kill. just like hearing songs or being asked about being suicidal doesn't make people suicidal.

you are talking out of your ass because you had it at 12 and it didn't do anything like that to you. i had it at 10 and i loved XYU for the raw angry energy. it didnt make me want to hurt anyone. if anything, listening to this kind of song helps kids channel their energy into something harmless

I've always believed the adore era should have went the way of "Eye" and "The End Is the Beginning Is the End" and I can really hear the influence of that ethereal pre-adore choice of playing on this version. also wasn't Billy working with Manson as a consultant at this time?

I think so, yeah. I love this Pumpkins style. it may be close to my favorite honestly. all of 1997 is so good to me.

also, i can't seem to figure out how to download from thepumpkins.net

I really like this version and the little nod to Romeo Void. Just makes me want to listen to the QOTSA version though...

The romeo void rants were the best part. I fucking love those recordings. I don't much like the new version of xyu, for several reasons, but more so because Billy has stopped his entertaining rants.

I never knew it was about murder. Thanks a lot, now I'm going to get murderous urges every time I hear this song.

I'm going to a Pumpkins show tonight and by the looks of the recent setlists, they're going to play it. I was excited to hear it but now I'm going to be worried that I'll murder someone.

Mmm-hmm. Gish08 sounds fucking pussy. He should just get it over with and join the PMRC with Tipper Gore. I was listening to Cannibal Corpse at age 11 and I never did anything too bad to anyone, either, even though I was often a righteously angry powder keg at that age. I'd hate to see his reaction to The Sickness by Disturbed.

The lyrics are absolutely psychotic however, and truly a confirmation of how loony Rob Halford is. It's like a sick outlaw fantasy in audible form. It's part of what makes him a good songwriter (that is, being so all over the place in terms of his emotions and such), but seriously, as I get older it's hard to listen to that and not say "wow, this is really fucked up".

It was also pretty amazing to see Rob tweet that this is his favorite studio performance, given that he is gay now. What kind of person would be comfortable in having such a good relationship with men blah blah but then still be okay with turning around and saying "I still love this song I wrote about committing crimes, it's my fav performance!" I know he wasn't talking about the 1979 version but still.

Also, didn't he play the song during charity concerts for police officers and such? What kind of sick fuck would do that?

He's just crazy, but more of a gay twat now.

Huh? Are we even talking about the same song? Give me an example of the "absolutely psychotic" lyrics, because I'm just not seeing it at all...

What about Eric Clapton's song "I Shot the Sheriff"? What do you think of that, then?

I think '98 XYU could be the last honest SP1 jam; I think by the Machina tour they were so self-aware (resuming the pose, if you will) that all the jams, even XYU, seemed very self-satirical and usually played for laughs just as much as they were played for rock. Certainly Glass never got close. I'm not saying that jams on the 2000 tour never rocked, but they lacked an organic necessity that illuminated their classic epics.
