I'd fucking get a mac.

While you're at it, pick up an I-Pod. At least 10GB.

Powerbook G4's kick ass.

Get that. But, they'll run you a good $3,200. That might not be worth it if you just need to type and browse the web.

powerbooks are drool-worthy...but iBooks arent bad either...im pretty damned fond of mine. but music sharing is a bit of a bitch...
it completely out-performs my old pc by far though...that and the built-in software like iTunes, iPhoto, etc. is really good...nothing like the headaches that i used to have with the stuff microsoft "wanted" (forced more like) into using. and yes, it does look pretty. theres a little light that comes on and looks like its breathing when its in sleep mode, and the apple on the top lights up when the computer is in use.
am i starting to sound like one of those commericals? probably. oh well.

I bought an iMac a month ago. I love it, but yes, it depends on what you want.

My advice: spend a bit of time playing around with Mac OS X to see if you like it. I think it's better than Windows, but it does have a few features which could possibly annoy you if you're used to Windows.

Yes, you can open Microsoft Word documents in AppleWorks, and you can save documents in Word format if you wish.

The worst thing I've found with the Mac so far is that in AppleWorks (word processing, spreadsheets, drawing, etc) YOU ONLY GET ONE UNDO!! Crazy!

Check out www.apple.com/switch (I think). It's really personal preference - having used both Windows and Mac, my preference is definitely the Mac (though I haven't tried Windows XP very much, to be fair).

The day I bought my Mac it almost made me cry because it was so easy to set up. My PC often made me cry too, but for very different reasons. (mandatory commercial-type talk )

you pussies

mac hardware is overpriced & proprietary
get a pc & run linux on it
linux already has 5% of the desktop market. mac has 2%. windows has like 92%, while 1% is misc other stuff..

it really is becoming a viable alternative. OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) works with all MS office documents. Wine (windows emulator, sortof) runs windows programs. You can run MS Office in linux if you'd like.

Mandrake 9 or Redhat 8 will come with all the software you could ever want, all with just a regular install.

Way more power & flexibility than a mac.

you can even get VMWare for linux & boot windows up like a program in a window, and it'll boot faster than it normally would.

with a pc you just have more options.. mac just doesnt have the software support that PC does, and it never will. at least if you have a PC platform you can dual boot linux & windows. use linux for everyday tasks, and boot into windows for the software you can't run in linux. much more flexible.

*points you to my reply in the OS thread*

If you're not technically minded, or you don't have someone to help you out, Linux will make you cry

i think those times are pretty much over. the new KDE or gnome give you a wonderful working environment. the only thing you have to look for are drivers. if you have some very exotic hardware you might get problems. and setting it up i think is not really any harder than to set up a windows machine...
