You know the mind is simply an idea. If your brain were ever accurately reconstructed in the future, that clone would be you, same consciousness and all. Maybe some advanced society would endeavor to do that as a means of escaping death; in fact it will almost certainly happen once we have electronic brains, if a particular body of ours dies, we have all our information backed up and can just get reconstructed.

But they're probably not going to bother reconstructing ancient meat sacks like us; they wouldn't have the information to do so. Our only real hope is probably in the simulation argument. I'm actually warming up to the idea that there's a decent chance that an advanced civilization would create huge numbers of simulations of earlier societies, not for the purposes of studying, but as a utilitarian endeavor.

The main problem is that our world doesn't seem particularly utopian, but perhaps it's simply too difficult to fully monitor/control a randomly generated universe, and the computational resources required to do so are better served just generating more universes. Or perhaps such control is considered immoral, and the creators want to give us the same jurisdiction over reality that we'd have in a 'real' universe.

If we lived in a simulation that were well-controlled enough though, there would probably be some kind of afterlife programmed in. Hopefully it's not a Mormon heaven.
