Default best shows of 2011

  • Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Fun Fun Fun Fest - Played a fantastic set even though he was horse and then changed into a Danzig costume and performed Misfits songs including "Skulls"
  • Titus Andronicus, Emo's - Monsterously good show, they're so blue collar that they still man their own merch booth and set everything up. Lots of intensity and passion and an enthusiastic, small crowd. Also turns out to be the last time I'll ever be at Emo's. It was a shithole but it was a punk rock shithole.
  • Wild Flag, IFC house SXSW - Was like being at a house party, I was standing directly in front of Mary Timony with Carrie F. Brownstein on my right hand side. Sounded brilliant and they are simply so good. I never heard of Mary Timony before but afterwards I was a fan. I just crush on ladies that have 15 pedals and an orange head. Also this place gave us free beer.
  • Japandroids, Mohawk - Loudest show I have ever seen (until Slayer at Fun Fun Fun and they were outside). They absolutely ROCKED that little room, and I loved that they played Halifax a couple days later. They weren't kidding about loving this town.
  • Lykke Li, Fun Fun Fun Fest - I read about her stuff and was curious about it but I didn't quite expect the goth rock explosion that I saw at FFF. She runs around the stage like a witch inducing a seance, with flowing black robes and the six slender black pennants behind her on the stage looking out on the skyline with smoke effects casting everyone in shadow now and again was just gothome spectacle. And her voice is something else. Also she sampled POWER. Goth + Kanye = Win.

I only went to three but two of the three were excellent.

Deftones - I saw them in a veryyyyy small venue which was cool but I'm not a fan of them at all and find their music extremely boring. So wasn't that much of a fan of this concert.

TV on the Radio - Excellent show. Probably one of the more enjoyable concerts that I've attended. I saw them before at Bonaroo a few years back but this is the first time going and seeing them in a venue for the purpose of seeing them. Great show.

OFWGKTA - A very high energy show that was a lot of fun to attend.

oh no wait it was the Smith Westerns/Cults ACL after show that didn't happen at the parish. Wild Beasts did play an ACL aftershow there.

M83 was the best show I've ever seen.

Every Drive-By Truckers show I went to.

Two Gallants.

My Morning Jacket/Arcade Fire back to back at Bonnaroo

Gogol Bordello 1am at Bonnaroo, even though I'm surprised I didn't pass out in what was essentially a giant hippie mosh pit (entire crowd)

yeah, I live in the town they're from though, so they play a show every 2-3 years here usually. last time I was able to see them was 2008

only shows i saw this year:

acid mothers temple with shilpa ray and her happy hookers at a club in montreal. those japanese dudes are wild and the singer of shilpa ray really has awesome attitude and is totally indian.

deerhoof at poisson rouge in nyc. got in for free during the opening act and shortly after, david byrne appeared on stage and sang a song with whatever that band was. deerhoof was awesome of course.

various classical shows. best was boston symphony orchestra in symphony hall. awesome concert hall bro, i'm talking top tier shit

yeah i love robyn but since i mostly go to shows myself i could never see her.

i saw Titus open for The Hold Steady last month and it was top 5 show of ALL TIME. Stickles came back out for the last song to scream along and crowd surf.

still spewing that ticket sales were so poor that swans cancelled their show in my city, to play a second show in Melbourne at a venue with a capacity of 180. fuck life.
