I don't know what the political ramifications will be, but I think it's a good insight into cultural attitudes and the way the past comes back to haunt in such strange ways. How funny that the offending rock was literally white-washed.

I don't like Rick Perry, but this story is pretty stupid. He said his father painted over the rock in like 1983, and it's not his fault someone named the place at a point in time when that sort of thing was normal. It's not like he named it himself.

There are way more important things to dislike Perry for.

Agreed. The number of "anonymous" sources doesn't sit right with me. And political opportunists are wanting to blow it up to more than I think it might end up being (I think calls for Perry to pull out of the race are premature, Al Sharpton).

On the other hand, if I had any aspirations for presidency or any political office you can be sure I would have ground that stone to fine dust at the first convenient moment. It seems like poor judgment was at play at some point, although to Rick Perry's credit and in his support he has no history of race-baiting or racially insensitive marks.
