Default $19 Smart Phone Plan

found out too late about this new $19 per month phone plan

http://www.republicwireless.com/join

piggy backs automatically on WiFi and routes your data, phone calls, text through WiFi instead of cell. When no wifi is available, it reverts to cell.

only one Droid phone available during the Beta. Kind of kicking myself now. I didn't think they'd fill up so fast and I had a chance to join yesterday while it was still open.

this kind of service makes a lot of sense. why am I paying $100/mo for ATT when virtually all of my calls and such are placed within the range of a WiFi signal?

Virgin Mobile has a wider range of phones for $35 a month. I'm lucky and got in when it was only $25. The service is alright, and the phones are pretty decent. It's 300 minutes, unlimited data and texts, but I rarely talk so I don't mind not having unlimited talk time. I think unlimited everything is only $55 (or maybe $50? They've changed it)

Also, they're 3G so you don't have to worry about finding a wifi signal all the time.

don't know about other smartphones but i don't see why automatically picking up wifi is a big deal. iphone, for example, remembers networks you've already connected to and prefers those over 3G.

yeah it's not really unlimited unless you're always near wifi. which some people are.

and if you go over the limit, they send you reminders. and tell you how to keep your data consumption down. and if you don't do it quick enough (they say they give people plenty of time), they kick you out.
