for most of college I worked a full time AND a part time job year round, and I went to school full time. I did not take summers off from school. I had my own apartment and car, which I paid for.

While the cost of tuition has gone up a lot, I have little sympathy for people in their 20s with undergraduate liberal arts degrees and $50k-$100k in student loan debt.

while students are always in the vanguard of movements like OWS, there are a great many people who are not students. the 10000 people who showed up in Oakland yesterday weren't all students.

Just like the 100000 people who showed up in Madison wisconsin week after week to protest the GOP power grab earlier this year.

if by "power grab" you mean "duly elected officials who attempted to call a vote" then yes, power grab.

Without a care to step back and see how the culture has manifested to this point? Lead a horse to water it will drink and when the alternative to college is to go fight in a bunch of ridiculous wars for a g.i. bill it begs for a view to realize there's a game of schnooker going on. Used to be the financial system was there to help and serve the people and now its people being asked to serve our overly financed culture. The largess of student loans and the brainwash on students and parents to go to college from k-12 is evidence of the gluttonous college scene.

Better to forgive students of those loan debts than pay off the derivative double-minded scammers of those bankers behind the loans. They drove our government to guarantee these loans thus allowing colleges to naturally create the bubble we now see in hyper-inflative tuition so that the eggheads in the ivory towers can add perks on top of their free houses, healthcare and pensions.

as much as I find it hard to sympathize with huge student borrowers, I agree with you. I would rather see the gubment forgive student loan and mortgage loan debt than pour money into a rotten financial system. but if the fed did that it would need to follow some massive overhaul of the education and loan industry to ensure it won't happen again.

beyond predatory lending the biggest problem isn't really tuition inflation. it's the depression of wages. why can't an average working class couple afford to send their kids to school? because of inflation? or because buisness interests have intentionally driven down wages for more than 3 decades? If real wages had risen instead of tanked over that time, most families could better afford tuition.

for that matter, a public education should be mostly "free" to all citizens, whether it's 4 years of college or a trade school. everyone in society benefits from a well educated citizenry. only the 1% benefits from students shackled with debt.
