my dad is pretty cool. he is a cabinetmaker that works for the supreme court. apparently they have a staff of six. before that he was a photographer in the navy. he is a true artisan but has a very unartistic personality.

Thumbs up

He cheated on and left my mum when I was about 9, moved around through various European countries working as an executive at some huge conglomerate company in Germany. He recently started working as a self-employed consultant for some oil company and is now on the road half of the time.

He's got a nice sense of humour and a kind of relentless cynicism which I apparently inherited. He was also the first one to introduce me to music I actually enjoyed when I was a wee lad.
Just like me he can't handle money for shit and lived beyond his means for the better part of his life.

I'm kinda bummed I only get to see him once every few months, but we mail and talk a lot on the phone or via Skype, so it's not like we're likely to lose touch.

Oh, yeah, and I hope to god I didn't inherit his receding hairline...

my dad is super conservative when it comes to both religion/social issues and politics. i guess both my parents are but my dad is a lot more vehement and confrontational about it. if an issue can be seen as a "left vs right" thing he will always side with the right, regardless of how indefensible the position is. for instance, he will complain about businessmen selling america out by outsourcing all the jobs, but if the same issue is brought up in an OWS argument he will defend it as a hallmark of capitalism. he has worked his whole life, fighting in vietnam and putting himself through college and grad school. i think being a combat veteran shaped his personality a lot. he's spoken multiple times about how disgusted he was to come back from the war and see how alienated he was from the rest of america who were either protesting or had their minds on the next superbowl and so on.

he's always been a reader. he likes stuff like non-fiction about native americans and nature, books like moby dick etc. he's always been very hands-on with car and home repairs, ham radios, home-made cloud chambers etc. his health is pretty poor these days after a decade of struggling with cancer. he would give anything for his kids, though i have to say we were all a little terrified of him growing up
