i don't begrudge your tastes in music, and your hipster knee-jerk reactions were fully expected. and for the record i like sonic youth (mostly). all i'm saying is that st.vincent is the first female guitarist i've heard whose playing isn't just above average, but actually has a sense of identity, is sophisticated and is able to tell a story. and that is a worthy accomplishment in my eyes.
none of you have offered me a valid retort because you can't name another female player that's like that. you've only attempted to change the subject. |

why is she being judged on being a woman instead of just as a musician by the way
do we need to have separate lists of female guitarists still |

i'm not judging her on "being a woman". i just think its interesting that only in the last few years have we seen the emergence of any truly individual female guitarists. perhaps that doesn't necessarily have any objective value, i guess i'm just slightly feminist and glad to see girls finally making their mark on progressive guitar music, which has always been a male preserve. there have always been plenty of great female guitarists, from rosetta tharpe playing the blues back in the 50s, to lita ford being an underrated songwriter and shredder in the 80s, to kaki king and kelli rudick being untouchable geniuses of the two-handed tapping style. but i've never heard a really distinctive female "alternative" guitar act. that's new ground being broken, and i think that's exciting.
and i haven't ignored you for liking sonic youth. you just don't seem to appreciate the clear difference in the level of artistry between their style and any of the other guitarists i mentioned before. |

i'm aware that any woman reading this would find it patronizing. but that doesn't make it any less true.

So I finally got this new LP and it is FANTASTIC. Maybe record of the year.... Best first impression so far along with Gillian Welch.
The way she blends synth, bass, and guitar is what makes her inventive and unique. Take any one of those elements out and the balance is off. |
