looks like the dictionary proved me right

public schools teach us to be patriotic and love capitalism and follow the rules. What you have to remember is that being "indoctrinated" is not necessarily a bad thing.

we all get indoctrinated

we are saying the pledge of allegiance before we can even read or grasp the basics of what we are pledging to

independent thought is discouraged

increasingly middle schools are putting kids on track for 'careers' later. can you imagine choosing your college major at 13? it's similar

basically schools are indoctrination facilities.

we're pretty clearly using the second definition, the one that is used more frequently. no one says an elementary school teacher teaching kids long division is "indoctrinating" them (while she is doing the long division lesson. i'm not talking about when she makes kids stand up and say the pledge or whatever you guys wanna go on about). she is "instructing" them though.

they are different words that conjure different images and do different things. to equate them because they have basic similarities is unnecessary and counterproductive. in the context of the conversation we were having, "indoctrinate" clearly means a lot more than "instruct."

indoctrination isn't inherently a bad thing but in the context of this conversation it represents imbuing children with wrong, lazy, and potentially dangerous ideas. so it is a bad thing. a thing that wouldn't be properly identified by the word "instruction."

my point is that indoctrination and instruction aren't synonymous. i did not make the argument that schools don't indoctrinate students.
