when did all the tv shows become soap operas

when i was a kid they made fun of soaps and their stay at home mom audience in the cartoons i watched

now everybody watches soaps

talking about breaking bad, mad men, those vampire shows, prison break, etc

are these shows soap operas? what is a soap opera?

someone discovered they can get more mileage out of a show that has longer multiple story-arcs as opposed to weekly short stories that begin and end finitely and succinctly.

instead of being inhibited because "it's not the movies" tv show makers found a way to make that initial badge of shame work for them.

i think soap serials are more like comics where they have a bunch of archetypes and they just kind of pair them off against each other for all of eternity and the good modern tv series are novels on screen

i think its the way programming is managed in america. i notice in, say, japan when they have a show, it's intended to last only X amount to seasons regardless of how successful it is. in america if a show gets amazing ratings they'll pump it to the last drop.

right now cable and basic cable networks are able to fund shows near feature film level quality so it encourages serialized storytelling that would otherwise be limited by a 2 hr movie or a regular network TV show

I'm somewhat familiar with things like Dexter or Mad Men but those are nowhere close to being soap operas, which to my understanding are the soft lens crapfests for old women that come on after the Price is Right during the day, something I haven't watched since Bob Barker departed
