i think it's because around then his albums stopped sounding like what people thought neil young albums should sound like. on the beach is abstract almost like a no-wave record. seems to be filled with burned-out pissed off diatribes that meander and fester. on the beach i have always taken to mean, as in traveling, once you've gone so far where you can't go any further there is only the beach and there is only the ocean. your options are to hang around on the beach, turn around and go back, or get in the water and go further. so what now?

I just got Everybody Knows... and After the Gold Rush on mint vinyl, the latter had never been played
