my mother can make me go from completely calm to severely agitated in under 2 minutes of casual conversation. i dont know what it is, she plays me like a fiddle.

tv can make me really annoyed, really fast. its mostly the advertisements. some of it is just so unbelievably inane... i swear it does damage to your brain. reality tv (when did most tv become reality tv?) in particular is, i honestly believe, actually detrimental to your health, i can stomach 5 minutes or it before wanting to slit my wrists. (stopped watching a number of years ago and have become the snooty anti-tv prude i used to hate).

guys trying to act macho, puffing up their chest, picking fights, yelling dumb shit. gets under my skin so fast. im not sure if i can think of any behaviour more appalling and stupid -- its the lowest of the low. i live in the club district of my city and just have to look out my window on a friday night to witness all sorts of shit that makes me embarrassed to be male. especially when two guys are sort of pounding their chests, goading each other "yo, step up bro!," barking at each other hysterically ughh

i only watch tv on netflix streaming for those reasons

inane shit in general, like super contrived pop music, especially the kind you hear on adult contemporary radio stations -- stuff completely indistinguishable from ironically cheesy music. makes your eyes glaze over, absolutely mind numbing shit. even listening to a couple songs leaves me with suicidal thoughts.

most advertisements make me way too annoyed too, even relatively tame print ads. you just see the crude logic of them, the naked appeals to vanity, the idiotic lifestyle they push. they pander to what they think their audience wants and likes, but in the process just offer a really hideous reflection of certain demographics. the ads for new condo buildings downtown are the worst, their audience being shallow young professionals with more money than brains and pathetic cosmopolitan pretensions. the ads tailored to this demographic are really unbelievable pieces of kitsch. its the knowledge that the ads actually work that make me despondent.

i mean i think lady gaga is legitimately good and whoever writes some of katy perrys songs really knows what theyre doing sometimes

i do get real exasperated when i hear S&M though
like chains and whips really excite her

oh im not even talking about top 40 like that... even someone like rihanna has some sort of artistic value, however minimal. i dont have much beef with pop music in general, some of it is brilliant in ways a lot of indie music could learn from.
but theres some pop music that is exclusively derivative, just as safe and generic as conservative as they can make it. think about glossy pop country stuff, or really most of the stuff on your local adult contemporary, "for the office" music station. something soul crushing about it or something... deadening, i feel numb listening to it. actually pay attention to the lyrics for a couple bars and the suicidal thoughts creep up...

you know we're already ramping up to peak oil and our society's dependence on the automobile is something nobody will think about until the overhead to simply maintain a household skyrockets. alternative methods of powering automobiles are unrealistic and are really born out of adversity to change. or adversity to doing things because they might be uncomfortable. or procrastinating until inevitable economic catastrophe.

urban sprawl, in a few words, just a symptom of our collective ignorance. isn't that something to get enraged about?

I don't watch TV on a regular basis BUT the medium of episodic television shouldn't be overlooked as a story medium. In fact, adaptations of complex novels work better as television series than a three act movie and The Wire is one of the best things that has ever been made by human artistry. There's more than a few good television programs out there.

But yea, reality tv has no real intrinsic value and the commercials annoy me to death as well.
