That's simply not true at all. I like music based on strictly how it sounds and I don't give a shit about the image of the musician. I just don't like the sound of country music so that's why I don't like Toby Keith. I'm always trying to seek out and find new bands that I like and if I hear something I like then I'll like it. I wont look into their image after I've heard them and then determine if I like them or not.

I mean shit, I like Katy Perry but I don't care about her image trying to reach out to slutty teenage girls.

Hey we get it, you have some incredibly severe inferiority complex going on about yourself that causes you think in your head that since you buy into superficial things so much and blame that for your shitty social life that then everyone must too. Sorry but that's just not the case.

I like music for purely what it sounds like. If I enjoy it, then I listen to it. If I don't then I don't. I don't give a shit how the musician looks or presents themselves because absolutely none of that comes into play when I'm listening to their music in my car.

I'm sorry that you have an inability to enjoy music for what it is, it must be such a shitty thing to care so much about what others might think of you for listening to what you really like.

skying is some pretty good shoegazy stuff you should check it out, they've dropped the silly gothic clown get up and they were worse than Robert Smith on his gothiest day.

However you *can* argue that image isn't everything, and its importance varies greatly from one case to the next. You just end up arguing semantics. Like culture, it's fluid and there is no "right answer".
I personally don't have the energy to argue about it, so I just let it be.

You put image on such a profound pedestal, you try to use it to blame it for all of your own personal shortcomings. It makes it incomprehensible for you to then realize that some people just like music for what it is because you yourself are getting too caught up in thinking of what other people will think of you due to the music that you listen to and the images associated with those acts.

haha that's not what is going on here, i'm merely acknowledging a fuller aspect of the music than just "the music" and if you're going to be a liar and act like you're just into stuff simply because it sounds good is laughable from someone as superficial as you act. the whole package is important, the album artwork, the live performances and of course the music but what takes a good band to a great band is a love of their aestetic

i want to remind everyone that i'm a Pixies fan and they aren't beautiful people let me assure you. But there is a stylistic sum total of the band that puts it above entertainments for the now, for me.

having arguments and disagreements over ideas isn't "fighting." If eulogy wants to get all angry and use italics that's his problem.

The album artwork? Why the fuck would I give a shit about the album artwork? I down my music I don't see any album artwork. I don't go to many live shows, but when I do the image of the band means jack shit to me. The three concerts I've gone to in the past year have been TV On The Radio, The Deftones, and The Roots. 3 drastically different images and crowds. The image means jack shit to me, if I enjoy the music then I'll like the band. I don't give a shit about the image of a band, I only like music due to the music. It's not a difficult concept to understand and I truly feel sorry for you that you are so incapable of enjoying music in the same pure way that I do and I believe many others do as well.

banana, do you enjoy music videos? don't you agree that a good video can add an extra dimension to a song and perhaps make you appreciate it more? album artwork, theatrical performances and artistic photos/videos are all extensions of a band's identity and massively affect the way people perceive them. music is of course the core element of any band's oeuvre, but multimedia output and visual presentation can make a band more three-dimensional. its fine for an artist to be completely non-image conscious, but that gives the audience less to identify with. most people are more receptive to what they see than what they hear. to say you enjoy music purely by itself and claim that a band's image or visual output has never affected your perception of them, even unconciously, is nonsense. its like saying that given a choice, you'd rather have a meal without the trimmings. its not objectively wrong, just pointlessly self-limiting.

Can't say I watch music videos. This isn't the 90's where I'd sit and watch MTV and see all sorts of music videos. I mean pretty much every music video I've posted in this thread was the first time I've seen the actual video for it. So I fail to see how album artwork, artistic photos and videos have any effect on if I like music when I don't seek out those things and I just listen to the music for what it is. A lot of the music I listen too I have no fucking clue what the band looks like.

I like music for what is, music. If it sounds good to me and gets my toe tapping then I like it.
