Haven't you ever heard of bands saying that they dress the way the music sounds? I've heard artists say that.

You wouldn't expect a New Romantic group to dress like the members of Nirvana. And it might be more likely for a neo-soul / R&B artist to wear a suit than a rock musician.

seriously though i think if you're only concerned about the music and zero of the surrounding context that is what separates the people that say the like music vs the people who really do like music.

"do you guys like music? i know - everyone says they do."

Right. The poeple who really do like music are the ones who actually like music and you are in the camp of people who say they like music yet are completely influenced on the irrelevant factors of what that bands image is and how they are perceived by other people as a result of said image.

karen o sells herself like a clown. that's enough for me right there to be ashamed of the music they make.

i wouldn't go to an obnoxious restaurant just because the food is good. other alternatives exist.

if the food appeared magically on a plate in your own fucking house whenever you wanted it to then you'd be an idiot not to eat it

do you even have a point?

you don't listen to bands if you don't like what they wear or how they act regardless of the musical output?

that's fine i guess? but the fact that you're using this nonsensical soap box to demean the music listening habits of other people is dumb.

Once again a complete non-point attempt by you in effort to try to make sense of how the image of a band is at all a variable on the musical content that it produces.

by the way i'm with slunken, if people say they're just attracted to the music because of the music they are liars*

banana's favorite bands are like what was the hipster check list five years ago, but it makes sense he's completely late since he wears eagles hats backwards

and eulogy likes tool, nine inch nails, deftones, and the smashing pumpkins and they all have a similar aesthetic whether he's going to admit it (never) or not.

*if this were completely true then their favorite musicians would be anything from Billie Holiday to Toby Keith.

I like Yuck and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart but they dress like blind children and it's fairly embarassing

look up the Horrors from their first album days too and tell me that doesn't color the music in a negative fashion. Skying's good but even they realized they couldn't look like goth clowns and be taken seriously

i really hate it when people try to pretend they don't live in an image saturated media culture that they are a product of

especially when they're as profoundly superficial as banana

honestly jimmy is the only one that doesn't look right in that pic, to me. the rest of them pull off the glam look but Jims looks like the hard rock heroin junkie they found in a bar and slapped a transparent black shirt and some eyeshadow on to fit in with the rest of the band

you guys make fun of james iha looking like a girl but in terms of pulling off a glam look he's the one who nails it with flying colors.

there's nothing wrong with style, eat shit.

I just realised that I haven't listened to The Horros for this exact reason. I'm so shallow. What makes it worse is that I listen to the king of goth clown bands (The Cure) on a fairly regular basis.

They also have similar music in a lot of ways (and before we get into some sort of discussion about how tool is terrible, i don't care. not going to defend them.)

crazy about that, right. the bands i like (those mentioned above, radiohead, sigur ros, fiona apple, rilo kiley, remy zero, the kills, etc.) are all going to have some sort of similar aesthetic because they're in a sense similar bands because that is the kind of music i enjoy.

there is no example of me liking a band less because i don't like the image or liking it more because i do that i can think of. i mean do you really think i like the aesthetic that the deftones go for?

http://www.orlandofloridaguide.com/e.../Deftones2.jpg

Those look like people I'd never ever want to speak to or hang out with ever. but why would i give a shit about that? because you do and can't fathom that other people might not?
